Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Conspiracy

By Boxing Day, the storm outside had cleared, leaving the city wrapped in crisp, brilliant sunlight.
The federal investigation into Ashcroft Maritime didn't collapse—it inverted. Armed with the authentic master ledger and the digital audit trails recovered from Julian Vance’s encrypted laptop, federal prosecutors realized that Julian had been the architect of every leak, every fabricated debt, and every corporate sabotage attempt targeting Ashcroft’s legitimate shipping terminals for the past two years.
The corrupt federal agents working with Julian were quietly arrested before they could execute their planned holiday raid on the estate. By nightfall, the headlines in the Boston Globe shifted from speculative rumors about the Ashcroft syndicate to the stunning indictment of a rogue federal prosecutor and a corrupt corporate executive.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of the Beacon Hill mansion, the tension of the past forty-eight hours had finally dissolved.
I sat at the small wooden desk in the kitchen, organizing the pantry inventory while wearing a comfortable knit sweater and a lightweight wrist splint.
Heavy footsteps approached down the stone corridor.
Killian Ashcroft walked into the kitchen, carrying a steaming mug of black coffee and a small, official-looking document folder. He didn't wear his usual overcoat; he looked human for once—older, tired, but entirely in control.
"How is the wrist?" he asked, setting the coffee mug down beside my ledger.
"It heals," I said, looking up. "The doctor at St. Brendan’s was wrong—it's not fractured, just severely sprained. I’ll be back to full polishing duty by New Year's."
"You won't be polishing silver anymore, Maeve," Killian said quietly, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite me.
I paused, my heart skipping a beat. "Sir? Are you firing me?"
"Julian’s departure leaves a vacancy as my chief administrative coordinator," Killian replied, sliding the document folder across the table. "A position that requires discretion, absolute loyalty, an extraordinary memory for detail, and someone who refuses to break even when thugs throw them into a snowbank."
I opened the folder. Inside was a formal contract naming me Director of Administrative Operations for Ashcroft Maritime, complete with an office on the top floor of the waterfront tower, a salary that would pay off my brother Rowan’s rehabilitation facility in full for the next ten years, and full health benefits.

"I don't know what to say," I whispered, staring at the lines of text.
"You don't have to say anything," Killian said, offering a rare, genuine ghost of a smile. "Just pour me a cup of coffee. We have a shipping empire to run."
