Chapter 4 - The UnravelingArthur Rowe stepped forward, clearing his throat loudly into a microphone near the presentation stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press and valued buyers,” Arthur announced, his voice trembling slightly. “Effective as of 9:00 AM this morning, Sterling Capital Management has acquired a sixty-percent controlling interest in Lark & Rowe. Allow me to introduce our new Chairman of the Board, Mr. Daniel Sterling.”

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Cassandra turned red, then dead pale. “Chairman? What... what is he talking about? Mom, what is he doing?”

Vivien stood frozen, her manicured hands trembling as she stared at me. “Daniel... you bought Lark & Rowe?”

“I bought it because I discovered that certain vendors were using this company to launder stolen money and commit corporate fraud,” I stated plainly, looking directly at Cassandra.

“Stolen money?!” Cassandra shrieked, her composure completely shattering. “How dare you! I earned this collaboration! I worked for months on these designs!”

I turned to Marcus and gestured toward the presentation boards.

Marcus stepped forward, opening a thick leather binder in front of the gathered buyers and press.

“On October 12th,” Marcus announced calmly, reading from the certified forensic report, “an unauthorized wire transfer of three hundred thousand dollars was initiated from Daniel Sterling’s private management account to an LLC registered under the name Aura. That money was then transferred directly to Lark & Rowe as an illegal sponsorship payment to buy Miss Cassandra’s placement in this collection.”

The press corps erupted. Camera flashes began going off like strobe lights.

“That’s a lie!” Cassandra screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Marcus. “Mom, tell them he’s lying!”

Vivien stepped forward, her eyes wild with desperation. “Daniel, this is private marital property! You cannot discuss our personal finances in front of the public! I had signature authority on that account!”

“You had signature authority to manage household expenses, Vivien,” I replied coldly, pulling a stack of legal documents from my attorney’s briefcase. “You did not have authority to transfer eight hundred and twelve thousand dollars over twenty-one months to fund your daughter’s failed business ventures.”

I turned the page.

“Nor did you have the authority to forge my digital signature to secure a three-million-dollar credit line from Apex Private Bank using my personal assets as collateral.”

A loud gasp went up from the fashion buyers.

Two men in dark suits stepped out from behind my security team. One of them pulled a brass badge from his jacket pocket.

“Mrs. Sterling, Miss Cassandra,” the man said firmly. “I am Investigator Rhodes from the New York State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Bureau. We have execution warrants for all bank records associated with Aura LLC and your joint accounts.”

Cassandra let out a choked sob, stumbling backward against the presentation board, knocking over a display of leather handbags.

“Wait!” Julian Vance interjected, sweating profusely through his double-breasted suit. “Mr. Sterling... please! I was just following orders! Mrs. Sterling told me that Clare was an illegitimate family member who was trying to sabotage Cassandra! She paid me to—”

“You took a fifty-thousand-dollar bribe to steal my daughter’s work,” I cut him off, staring into his coward’s eyes. “Mr. Rowe, terminate Mr. Vance immediately. Escort him from the building, and file a formal report with the Fashion Design Guild for professional misconduct and breach of contract.”

“With pleasure,” Arthur Rowe said, signaling the security guards, who immediately grabbed Julian by the arms and dragged him, protesting and yelling, toward the exit.

I turned my attention back to the display boards filled with beautiful, intricate sketches, fabric swatches, and leather prototypes.

I walked over to Clare, who was watching the entire scene in stunned silence. I reached out, took her by the hand, and led her to the center of the stage.

“These designs,” I announced to the room, pointing to the master portfolio, “were created by Clare Sterling. Every sketch, every technical measurement, and every material choice was executed by her during eighty-hour work weeks over the last five months.”

I looked down at my daughter. Her eyes were filled with tears, but for the first time in days, she was standing tall.

“Starting today,” I continued, “Clare Sterling is appointed Lead Creative Director of the Lark & Rowe Autumn Collection.”

The room erupted into applause. Several fashion editors immediately began snapping photos of Clare, while buyers rushed forward to hand her their business cards.

Vivien stepped toward me, her face pale, her voice a desperate, toxic whisper. “Daniel... please. You’re destroying us. Think of our marriage. Think of what people will say.”

I looked at the woman I had spent six years living with. I felt no anger left for her—only a profound, absolute disgust.

“My attorneys served the divorce papers to your personal assistant ten minutes ago, Vivien,” I said softly, so only she could hear. “You and Cassandra have two hours to clear your personal belongings out of my penthouse. After that, the locks will be changed, and my legal team will see you in court for financial fraud.”

Vivien stared at me, realizing with absolute finality that the empire of lies she had constructed had completely collapsed. Without another word, she grabbed her sobbing daughter by the arm and fled through the back doors of the showroom, pursued by a crowd of flashing cameras.
