Chapter 5 - The Terms of SurrenderThe room was deathly quiet as Valeria picked up a sleek fountain pen and tapped it gently against the black marble desk.

"Here are my terms," Valeria stated, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "They are non-negotiable. You will accept them in full, or Sofia will walk down to the magistrate's office in thirty minutes to file the criminal indictments."

Mauricio looked up from the floor, wiping his face with his sleeve. "What... what terms?"

"First," Valeria said, looking directly at Mauricio. "You will sign the uncontested divorce settlement immediately. You will forfeit any claim to alimony, joint property, or legal costs. Furthermore, you will sign a confession detailing your expense fraud at Trans-National Freight. Horizon Capital will decline to pursue criminal prosecution on the condition that you submit to five hundred hours of mandatory community service and agree to a permanent restraining order."

Mauricio swallowed hard, his throat dry. "And... my career?"

"Your career in logistics is over," Valeria said plainly. "No firm in the financial or commercial sector will hire you after your termination record is published. You will find employment elsewhere—perhaps in manual labor, where you can learn the value of actual work."

Mauricio bowed his head, defeated. "I'll sign."

Valeria turned her gaze to Gonzalo and Hector. "Second: Gonzalo’s sanitation firm will be liquidated to settle its outstanding vendor debts. Horizon will write off the remaining balance so you are not left with personal bankruptcy. However, Hector’s commercial warehouse will be surrendered to Horizon immediately. In exchange, I will cancel the mortgage on your family home, allowing your parents to keep their house."

Hector let out a ragged gasp of relief, tears spilling over his weathered cheeks. "Thank you... thank you, Valeria..."

"Do not thank me yet, Hector," Valeria warned sharply. "Which brings me to the third and final condition."

She locked her eyes onto Beatriz, who shrank back into her chair under the intensity of Valeria’s gaze.

"Beatriz," Valeria said, her tone dripping with quiet venom. "You spoke at length about how a woman’s duty is to serve the family through hard labor. You boasted about how you spent your entire life washing dirty clothes and cleaning up after men, and how it was time for me to take my turn."

Beatriz swallowed nervously, unable to form words.

"Effective next Monday," Valeria continued, "the Horizon Community Foundation will open a newly renovated public laundry and community center in the east district. It provides free laundry services and warm meals to low-income families and homeless veterans."

Valeria paused, letting the realization sink in.

"You, Beatriz, will serve as a full-time volunteer manager at that facility three days a week for the next three years," Valeria revealed calmly. "You will hand-wash, fold, and distribute linens for those in need. You will serve those who actually require help, rather than sitting in your home teaching your sons how to abuse women."

Beatriz’s eyes went wide with shock. "Me?! Working in a public laundry service?! In front of people?!"

"If you refuse," Valeria said, leaning over the desk, "I will proceed with the immediate foreclosure of your home, the liquidation of all personal assets, and the criminal prosecution of your eldest son. The choice is yours, Beatriz."

Beatriz looked at her husband, who was nodding frantically, silently begging her to accept. She looked at Mauricio, weeping on the floor. Finally, she looked back at Valeria—the woman she had tried to break with a bucket of dirty water.

"I... I accept," Beatriz whispered, her pride completely shattered.

"Good," Valeria said. She slid the legal documents across the table along with a silver pen. "Sign."

One by one, they signed every document. Mauricio’s hands shook so badly his signature was barely legible. When the final page was turned and signed, Sofia gathered the papers into her leather portfolio and gave Valeria a crisp nod.

"It is done," Sofia confirmed.

Valeria stood up from her desk. Her tall, elegant silhouette cast a long shadow across the marble floor.

"Marcus will escort you out," Valeria said, turning her back to them to look out over the vast city skyline. "Do not contact me again. Do not come to my office. If any member of your family approaches within five hundred meters of me or my staff, the full weight of my legal division will crush what little you have left."

Mauricio stood up slowly, looking at her back one last time. "Vale... I’m sorry."

May you like

Valeria didn't answer. She didn't even turn around.

The heavy doors of the executive suite closed behind the Ortega family, leaving them to walk back into the world they had built for themselves—a world devoid of power, money, and illusions.
