Chapter 4 - UNDER THE BURN PATTERN

Vanessa was the first to react.

She didn't scream. She didn't drop to her knees. She bolted.

With the feral instinct of a cornered rat, Vanessa lunged for the side exit that led toward the executive service stairs. But the moment her fingers touched the brass door handle, the door slammed inward, knocking her back onto the carpet. Two female marshals stepped through, their Glock 19s drawn and held in low-ready positions.

"Hands on your head, Ms. Cole!" one barked. "Interlock your fingers! Do it now!"

Vanessa hit the floor, sobbing hysterically—not with grief, but with pure, unadulterated terror. "It wasn't me! It was Daniel! It was his plan! He told me the door was empty! He told me she was already dead!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel roared.

He hadn't run. He couldn't. His boots seemed welded to the parquet floor. He stared at me as if the laws of physics had disintegrated before his eyes. His gaze traveled from my scarred neck, to my bandaged hands, to the cold, dead certainty in my eyes.

"You're dead," he whispered, his chest heaving violently. "I saw the certificate. The coroner... the dental records..."

"You saw what Detective Ortiz wanted you to see," I said, walking slowly to the head of the conference table. Every step sent a jolt of fire through my healing back, but I didn't let my posture bend by a millimeter. "You were so eager to sign that claim, Daniel. You couldn't even wait seventy-two hours. You had to have the wire executed before the hotel debris was cleared."

"Clara... baby, listen to me," Daniel stammered, his voice suddenly shifting, attempting that old, velvet cadence that used to dissolve my doubts. He took a half-step toward me, his hands raised in surrender. "You don't understand what happened. The smoke was so thick—I couldn't see you. I thought you were behind Vanessa! I swear to God, Clara, I went back for you! I tried to breach the door, but the ceiling collapsed—"

"Stop lying," I said. My voice was quiet, but it cut through his panic like a scalpel. "Miguel Santos is sitting in the federal courthouse right now, Daniel."

Daniel flinched as if I had struck him with an iron bar.

"Miguel?" he whispered.

"The banquet worker," I said. "The boy you thought was just an undocumented dishwasher who wouldn't dare speak to the police. He was in the dry storage room when you pushed Vanessa into the hallway. He watched through the louvered vent as you reached out, grabbed the master deadbolt, and threw it."

"He's lying!" Daniel yelled, his face turning an ugly, mottled crimson. "He’s a damn kitchen temp! He was stealing liquor! He panicked and started the fire himself!"

"Miguel didn't have four drums of methyl ethyl ketone in his truck, Daniel," Ortiz interrupted, stepping forward and dropping a heavy stack of photographic evidence onto the table. "Miguel didn't buy a burner phone three weeks ago that pinged the cell tower behind the Grand Hawthorne at 4:10 PM. And Miguel didn't forge Clara’s signature on a three-million-dollar life insurance rider two months after proposing to her."

"I didn't forge anything!" Daniel snarled, spinning toward Ortiz. "She signed that policy! We agreed to umbrella coverage!"

"I never signed a Lloyd’s supplementary rider," I said. "You know how I know, Daniel? Because I’m a forensic accountant. I’ve spent nine years analyzing signature pressure, ink chromatography, and digital vector forgery."

I pulled a single sheet of paper from Ortiz’s folder and slapped it onto the glass table.

"You used an auto-pen," I said, pointing to the magnified stroke analysis. "You copied my signature from our mortgage pre-approval documents. But you were sloppy. You used a zero-point-five-millimeter rollerball template on an electronic capture pad that recorded the pixel jitter. The timestamp on the vector file is dated three weeks ago, at 2:14 AM. From the IP address registered to Engine House 14. From your private office terminal."

Daniel looked down at the paper. His jaw worked silently. The polished, unshakeable Fire Captain Mercer was gone. In his place stood an arrogant, desperate gambler whose last card had just been turned over face down.

Vanessa, still pinned to the floor by the marshals, began screeching: "He told me she’d never know! He said the fire would consume everything! He said the building was scheduled for demolition next spring anyway and the insurance payout would clear all his gambling debts to the Chicago syndicate!"

"Vanessa, shut your filthy mouth!" Daniel lunged toward her, but the two federal marshals intercepted him instantly, slamming him chest-first against the heavy oak table.

His cheek was pressed flat against the glass, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

"Daniel Mercer," Detective Ortiz recited, clicking a pair of steel handcuffs around his wrists with a heavy, definitive snap. "You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated arson, insurance fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit capital murder. You have the right to remain silent..."

As Ortiz read the Miranda warning, Daniel twisted his head around, his eyes locking onto mine with pure, venomous hatred.

"You should have stayed in that room, Clara," he spat, his teeth bared in an animalistic snarl. "You think you're smart? You think you won? You're a broken, scarred freak now. Nobody’s ever going to look at you the same way again. You’re nothing without me!"

I walked over to him until I was standing only inches from his face.

I looked at the man I had loved. I looked at the man I had promised to honor, protect, and cherish until death did us part. I felt no rage. I felt no heartbreak. I felt only a profound, crystalline clarity.

"You're right about one thing, Daniel," I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear. "Death did part us. On that ballroom floor. The woman who loved you died behind that door. But the woman standing in front of you? She’s the auditor who’s going to make sure you spend the next forty years counting the cinderblocks in a federal penitentiary."

I straightened up and looked at the marshals.

"Get him out of my sight."
