Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Shadows

By 3:00 a.m., the bridal suite was empty of everyone but Naomi and me. The candles had burned down to pools of scented wax, and the scent of white roses felt stale and suffocating. I had changed out of my wedding dress and into a simple, charcoal-grey cashmere sweater and dark trousers.
Naomi sat at the small writing desk near the window, her laptop open, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she processed the emergency filings.
"The annulment petition is already in the court’s queue, Claire," Naomi said, not looking up from her screen. "Given the video and audio evidence of physical threat and coercion, the judge will sign off on the ex-parte order by 9:00 a.m. But we have a bigger problem. The forensic scan you ran on Adrian's personal accounts before the ceremony? The results just came back from our offshore banking analyst."
I walked over to the desk, holding a cup of black coffee. "What did he find?"
"It’s a classic extraction scheme, Claire," Naomi sighed, turning the screen toward me. "Adrian didn't just want your salary or a key to your house for his mother. His family’s real estate development firm, Vance-Miller Global, is currently drowning in eighty million dollars of unhedged debt from a failed luxury condo project in Miami. His father, Charles Miller, has been using secondary shell companies to systematically siphon funds from their local construction accounts to keep the creditors at bay."
"And Adrian was the designated lifesaver," I murmured, staring at the complex flow charts on the screen.
"Exactly," Naomi nodded. "He was targeting your family’s private security trust. Your father’s company, Vance Security Systems, has a liquid capital reserve of forty-five million dollars reserved for international development. Adrian's mother, Beatrice, had already drafted a series of high-yield corporate promissory notes. The moment you signed the joint marital property agreement—which Adrian had hidden inside our standard prenuptial pack under a modified clause—they were going to use your signature to guarantee a thirty-million-dollar emergency loan from a private equity firm in Zurich."
I leaned back against the desk, my eyes narrowing. "They didn't just want to control my life, Naomi. They wanted to hollow out my father's legacy to pay for their family's incompetence."
"And Beatrice is the architect," Naomi said, tapping a document on her screen. "Look at this. She’s the primary shareholder of the Delaware shell company that was set to receive the loan proceeds. Adrian was just the instrument. He’s a weak man controlled by a very dangerous, very desperate mother."
"Where is Adrian now?" I asked.

"His lawyer posted his signature on the temporary protective order at the precinct an hour ago," Naomi said, closing her laptop with a sharp click. "He’s currently at his mother’s estate in Greenwich. They think they can still fight this. His family’s PR firm is already drafting a statement claiming that you are mentally unstable and that the 'video' was a staged performance for a corporate coup."
"Let them draft it," I said, a cold, calm certainty settling into my chest. "Because tomorrow morning, we aren't just filing for an annulment. We are initiating a full corporate dissection of Vance-Miller Global."
