Chapter 3 - The Audit and the Assets

By Wednesday morning, the shockwaves of Connor Fleming’s arrest had completely dismantled his carefully curated world.
The financial crimes unit of the police department, working in tandem with Kenneth Boyd’s legal team, had spent the last forty-eight hours executing search warrants that laid bare the entire anatomy of Connor’s betrayal.
I sat across from Kenneth in his sleek downtown conference room, reviewing the forensic financial audit. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the sprawling glass towers of the city skyline.
"It's breathtaking, in a sociopathic sort of way," Kenneth remarked, sliding a multi-page spreadsheet across the mahogany table. "Look at this timeline, Kirsten."
I scanned the columns of figures. The numbers told a story far more sinister than simple greed.
When Connor and I first married, I had invested my entire inheritance from my grandfather—roughly two hundred and fifty thousand dollars—into seed funding for his company. At the time, he wept, kissed my hands, and swore that my name would be permanently etched as co-founder and primary stakeholder.
Two years later, when my father passed away, leaving us his suburban home, Connor convinced me to refinance the mortgage under his sole proprietorship "for tax optimization."
"He didn't just steal from you during the divorce," Kenneth explained, pointing a polished pen nib at a highlighted bank transfer. "He was systematically siphoning funds out of your personal savings accounts while you were working overnight shifts in the trauma unit. He funneled over six hundred thousand dollars into offshore accounts held under shell corporations managed by... guess who?"
I didn't need to guess. "Melinda."
"Bingo," Kenneth nodded. "Melinda Vance wasn't just your best friend; she was a trained corporate accountant who specialized in asset concealment. When Connor decided he wanted a new life—and a child he believed would anchor his social status—he didn't just walk away. He executed a planned hostile takeover of your entire financial existence, using your fertility struggles as both a psychological weapon and a smoke screen to keep you broken down and compliant."
I traced my finger over the printed wire transfer receipts. Every dollar represented hours of my life—sleepless nights, missed holidays, grueling surgeries, the emotional weight of holding dying children while trying to keep my own sanity intact. He had taken my labor, my love, my trust, and turned them into a bankroll for his new family.
"What is his current legal exposure?" I asked, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
"Multiple felony counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, tax evasion, and perjury in a civil proceeding," Kenneth listed calmly. "With the forged divorce documents and the tampering evidence we recovered from his hard drive, we’re looking at a minimum of ten to fifteen years in federal prison. And civilly? We are going to strip him down to the clothes on his back. Every penny he owns, every share in Vanguard Tech, his luxury apartment, his cars—it all reverts back to you, Kirsten."
Just then, the conference room door opened quietly. Kenneth’s paralegal stepped inside, holding a tablet with an urgent message.
"Mr. Boyd, you have a visitor in the lobby," the paralegal said, looking slightly uncomfortable. "It’s Ms. Melinda Vance. She insisted on speaking directly to Dr. Sinclair. She claims it’s an emergency."
Kenneth frowned immediately, shaking his head. "Absolute not. We have no reason to entertain her. I'll have security remove her from the premises."
I raised a hand, stopping Kenneth. A strange, calm curiosity washed over me. I wanted to see what the woman who had played the role of my devoted best friend while sleeping with my husband and helping him destroy my life looked like now that the curtain had fallen.
"Let her in, Kenneth," I said softly. "Let's see what she has to say."
A few minutes later, the heavy glass door of the conference room clicked open.
Melinda stepped inside. Gone was the polished, confident woman who had stood beside Connor in the hospital corridor holding a designer baby bottle. Her hair was unwashed and pulled back into a messy, loose ponytail; her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from endless crying; and her trench coat was rumpled, as if she had slept in it overnight in a police station waiting room.
She stopped short when she saw me sitting at the head of the mahogany table, looking pristine in my doctor's white coat.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The silence in the room was heavy, suffocating.
"Kirsten..." Melinda whispered, her voice cracking violently. She took a hesitant step forward, her hands trembling as she clutched a worn leather handbag against her stomach. "Kirsten, please... you have to help us."
