Chapter 3 - The Severed Ties

The next morning, the gray skies of Barranca Colorada mirrored the heavy storm brewing within our family. Daniel stayed home from work, standing guard by the front window with a cup of black coffee, while I tried to keep Mateo distracted with building blocks in the living room.

At 10:00 AM sharp, the familiar white sedan pulled up to the curb.

Before Carmen could even pull the handbrake, Daniel was out the front door, marching down the steps to intercept her before she reached the pathway. I watched from behind the living room curtains, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Carmen stepped out of her car carrying a woven wicker basket filled with fruit, wearing her Sunday-best pearls and an expression of unyielding stubbornness.

"Daniel, don't be ridiculous," Carmen said before he could speak, attempting to brush past him. "I brought oranges and homemade biscuits for the children. Put this childish nonsense behind you."

Daniel blocked her path entirely, standing like a stone wall.

"I told you yesterday, Mom. You are not welcome here," Daniel said, his voice echoing sharply down the suburban street.

Carmen’s face tightened into an ugly sneer. "You are punishing your own mother over a haircut? A haircut that boy desperately needed? You let that wife of yours manipulate you into turning against your own flesh and blood!"

"Valeria had nothing to do with this!" Daniel shouted, losing his temper completely. "This is about you. About your relentless need to control everyone around you. You lied to a school, you kidnapped my son, and you humiliated him just to satisfy your own warped sense of propriety!"

"I am protecting this family's dignity!" Carmen shrieked, dropping the basket of fruit onto the concrete. Oranges rolled violently across the pavement. "You think the neighborhood hasn't been whispering? You think people haven't laughed behind your back about that boy looking like a freak? I preserved his reputation!"

"He is five years old!" Daniel’s voice cracked with raw fury. "His reputation was being a happy, innocent child until you traumatized him! And you know what else, Mom? I’m done making excuses for you. I’m done letting you poison our lives under the guise of 'family love.'"

Carmen stepped back, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure malice. "You ungrateful, miserable boy. Without my financial help when you bought this house, you’d still be living in a cramped apartment. Without my connections, you wouldn't have even gotten your promotion at the firm. You owe me everything!"

"I owe you nothing," Daniel said coldly. "And effective immediately, any financial ties, any emergency contacts, any keys to this house you think you have—they are all revoked. You are dead to us, Carmen. If you ever try to approach Mateo or Sofía again, I will make sure the entire town knows exactly what kind of monster you really are."

For the first time, a genuine flicker of panic crossed Carmen’s face. She realized he wasn't bluffing. Her son—her usually compliant, dutiful son—had finally broken her chains.

"You'll regret this, Daniel," Carmen hissed, her voice trembling with venom as she climbed back into her car. "You'll come crawling back when you realize you can't survive without me."

She slammed the car door, backed out over her own spilled oranges, and sped away.

Daniel stood on the driveway for a long time, staring at the empty street. When he finally walked back inside, he locked the front deadbolt, turned to me, and pulled me into an embrace so tight it felt like we were holding each other together against a collapsing world.
