Chapter 2 - The Midnight EscapeThe tension in the trauma bay was so thick it felt physical.

Mara stood firmly in front of Owen, placing her body between the boy and the three men. "Get out of my trauma bay. You are violating hospital protocol."

"Your twenty minutes are expired, Dr. Ellison," Evelyn Mercer’s voice rang out from the hallway as she stepped into view, holding a signed legal release form. "The hospital administrator has authorized his discharge. If you interfere any further, you are committing medical kidnapping."

Sarah Jenkins, the social worker, appeared behind Evelyn, looking defeated. "Mara... the legal team stepped in. The administrator signed off. We can't stop him."

Grant walked past Mara as if she weren't even there. He reached out his large, manicured hand and grabbed Owen by the upper arm—the exact spot where the dark purple bruises already lingered.

Owen let out a blood-curdling shriek. "NO! MARA, HELP ME! DON'T LET HIM TAKE ME!"

"Let go of him!" Mara shouted, grabbing Grant’s forearm.

One of the private security guards immediately stepped forward, grabbing Mara by her shoulder and shoving her violently backward. Mara stumbled, knocking over a tray of stainless steel instruments. They crashed onto the floor with a deafening metallic racket.

"Keep her back," Grant ordered coldly, pulling the thrashing, screaming boy off the examination bed.

"Mara!" Owen screamed, his small hands clawing frantically at the air as Grant lifted him effortlessly into his arms and marched toward the exit doors.

Mara scrambled up from the floor, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She looked at Sarah Jenkins, who was standing frozen in horror.

"Sarah! Call the state police! Tell them a minor is being moved under duress!" Mara yelled, running toward the rear corridor.

"Mara, don't!" Sarah begged. "You'll lose your license!"

Mara didn't care about her license. She didn't care about the hospital, her career, or the legal threats. She had spent ten years treating victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, and hidden horrors. She knew the look of a child being led to his execution.

Instead of following them out the front emergency doors where Whitmore’s guards were blocking the hallway, Mara sprinted down the service corridor toward the hospital’s basement loading dock.

She knew the layout of St. Jude’s Hospital like the back of her hand. The emergency entrance led directly to the main circular driveway, but the ambulance bay exited onto the lower service road behind the building.

Mara burst through the double doors of the basement, her lungs burning, her sneakers squeaking against the wet concrete floor.

She hit the emergency crash bar of the rear exit door just as Grant’s black SUV pulled out of the upper driveway, descending toward the service road to clear the hospital grounds.

Rain was still pouring down in sheets.

The SUV slowed down to navigate the sharp turn onto the main avenue.

Mara didn't think. She sprinted across the slick asphalt directly into the path of the vehicle.

The SUV’s brakes screeched loudly as the driver slammed on the pedal, stopping less than three feet from where Mara stood, drenched in the freezing rain, her arms thrown out wide.

The driver’s side window rolled down, and a security guard leaned out, shouting angrily. "Are you insane, lady? Get out of the road!"

Mara didn't answer the driver. She darted to the rear passenger door, pulled the emergency latch, and yanked the heavy door open.

Grant was inside, holding Owen down in the leather seat. Owen was kicking and biting with feral desperation.

"Owen! Out!" Mara screamed, reaching into the vehicle.

Owen saw her. With a surge of superhuman strength born of sheer terror, the boy squirmed out of Grant’s grip, ducked under his arm, and threw his body out of the open SUV door into Mara’s arms.

"Grab them!" Grant roared from inside the vehicle.

The driver and the front security guard lunged out of the front doors.

Mara scooped Owen into her arms, turned on her heel, and ran blindly into the dense, dark woods that bordered the hospital grounds.

"Stop her!" Grant’s voice echoed through the rain-swept night behind them.

Trees and thick thorn bushes slapped against Mara’s face and arms as she sprinted through the darkness. The ground was slick with mud and decaying leaves. She carried the eight-year-old boy, her chest heaving, her vision blurred by rainwater and adrenaline.

Behind them, heavy footsteps were crashing through the underbrush. Flashlight beams cut through the dark woods like white blades.

"Dr. Ellison!" a guard’s voice boomed. "There is nowhere to go! Stop running!"

Mara kept moving, her heart threatening to burst from her chest. She knew these woods. Behind the hospital lay the old iron train tracks that ran along the river corridor toward the town of Oakridge.

She stumbled down a muddy ravine, sliding on her knees, keeping Owen pressed tightly against her chest to cushion his fall. They hit the bottom of the gulley where the old train tracks sat buried in overgrown weeds.

"In here!" Mara whispered frantically, spotting an abandoned concrete drainage culvert running beneath the raised railroad tracks.

She dragged Owen into the pitch-black tunnel. They crawled twenty feet inside, ducking behind a mound of washed-up gravel and rusted iron pipes, and pressed themselves flat against the freezing concrete wall.

"Shh," Mara whispered, wrapping her arms around the trembling boy, covering his mouth gently with her hand. "Don't make a sound."

Seconds later, flashlight beams swept across the entrance of the culvert.

Heavy boots stomped along the gravel above their heads.

"Where are they?" a guard yelled above the sound of the falling rain.

"They couldn't have gone far," another voice replied, sounding directly above them. "Check the riverbank! If Whitmore finds out we lost the kid, we’re all finished!"

The footsteps moved slowly down toward the river.

Inside the dark, freezing culvert, Mara held Owen close, feeling the rapid, terrifying thud of his heart against her ribs. She was shivering uncontrollably, her scrub top soaked through with mud and rainwater.

She had just kidnapped a billionaire’s legal son. She had assaulted security personnel. She was now a fugitive from the law.

She looked down at the pale boy in her arms. Owen looked up at her in the darkness, his gray eyes wide, his breathing slowly steadying.

"You came for me," he whispered, his voice trembling with awe.

Mara pulled him closer, kissing the top of his wet head. "I told you I wouldn't let him take you. And I meant it."
