CHAPTER 1: THE GLASS BEFORE THE STORM

Candlelight flickered across polished glass, casting soft gold reflections over a room that looked too perfect to be real.

A private restaurant on the top floor of a Manhattan tower.

Jazz floated through hidden speakers—slow, controlled, elegant.

Every movement inside felt intentional.

Every smile measured.

Every silence expensive.

At Table Twelve, Roman Vale sat like he belonged there.

Which meant he didn’t.

Not really.

Because men like Roman didn’t belong anywhere for long.

They were passing storms in tailored suits.

Across from him sat his fiancée, Elise Moreau.

Perfect posture.

Perfect smile.

Perfect everything.

The kind of perfection that didn’t feel warm.

It felt constructed.

Like a mask that had never been removed.

“You’re quiet tonight,” Elise said softly.

Roman didn’t look up from his glass.

“Just thinking.”

“About the wedding?”

A pause.

Roman finally lifted his eyes.

“No.”

That single word changed the air slightly.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But Elise did.

She always did.

At the edge of the room, a waitress moved between tables.

Nora.

Simple uniform.

Dark hair tied back.

Neutral expression.

The kind of woman people forget the moment she leaves their sight.

She carried a tray of water glasses with steady hands.

Too steady.

She reached Table Twelve.

“Good evening,” she said gently.

Roman barely glanced at her.

Elise smiled.

“Thank you.”

Nora began pouring water.

One glass.

Then another.

Then—

A subtle shift.

Her hand moved just slightly lower under the tray’s edge.

A flicker of motion.

A burner phone.

Hidden.

Gone.

But Roman saw it.

Not directly.

Not obviously.

Just enough.

His eyes didn’t change.

But something inside him did.

Nora set the last glass down.

And leaned slightly toward Roman.

“More water?” she asked politely.

Her voice was calm.

But her eyes weren’t.

They were sharp.

Focused.

Alive in a way that didn’t match her role.

Roman finally looked at her.

A fraction longer than necessary.

“No,” he said.

Nora didn’t move.

She shouldn’t have lingered.

But she did.

And then, almost invisibly—

she whispered.

Fast.

May you like

Controlled.
