Chapter 5 - The Final ApproachThe lights of Keflavík International Airport twinkled through the thick, swirling sleet like faint amber embers dropped into an ocean of ink.

Inside the flight deck of Flight 408, the tension was so thick it tasted of copper and adrenaline.

“Winds are two-hundred-eighty at thirty-two knots, gusting to forty-four,” Ethan called out, his eyes glued to the glass instruments as the automated voice of the ground proximity warning system chanted numbers in the background. “Five hundred... four hundred... three hundred...”

“Crosswind correction holding,” Isolda said, her voice a calm, steady anchor in the storm. Her hand hovered lightly over the throttle quadrant, ready to assist Ethan if the sudden shear off the North Atlantic threatened to push them off the centerline. “Keep the nose down, Ethan. Don’t float it. Plant it firmly so we don’t hydroplane on the slush.”

“Two hundred... one hundred...”

The massive aircraft broke out of the cloud deck at five hundred feet, revealing a slick, wet runway bathed in the blinding glare of high-intensity strobe lights and flashing blue emergency vehicles lined up along the tarmac.

“Runway in sight!” Ethan shouted.

“Fly the airplane,” Isolda reminded him gently, her eyes tracking his every micro-movement on the yoke.

“Fifty... forty... thirty...”

The aircraft dropped into the ground effect cushion, bucking hard as a vicious crosswind gust slammed against the tail. Ethan fought the ailerons, his arms straining, but for a split second, the starboard wing lifted dangerously.

Without hesitation, Isolda reached across the center console. Her hand slapped down over Ethan’s right hand on the throttle, rolling back power slightly while simultaneously kicking the rudder pedal to bring the nose back onto the centerline.

Thud.

The main landing gear slammed into the concrete with a bone-jarring impact, sending plumes of white smoke and flying slush spraying into the night air. The spoilers deployed automatically, the reverse thrusters roared to life with a deafening, chest-compressing whine, and the aircraft began to decelerate with relentless, mechanical fury.

“Decelerating... spoilers up... reversers normal,” Isolda called out, her voice never wavering as the speed bled off from one hundred and fifty knots down to eighty, then fifty, then twenty.

Ethan let out a long, shuddering gasp, releasing his grip on the yoke as his arms began to tremble uncontrollably. He leaned forward, resting his forehead against the cool plastic of the glare shield, his shoulders shaking with silent exhaustion.

Isolda reached out and gently patted his shoulder twice.

“Good job, Captain,” she whispered.

Ethan looked up, tears of sheer relief welling in his eyes. “We... we actually did it.”

As the aircraft finally taxied off the active runway and came to a complete stop on the ramp, the cockpit door swung open. Medical personnel, paramedics, and local airport authorities swarmed into the narrow galley space, ready to secure the captain and evaluate the flight crew.
