Chapter 6 - A Home Worth Taking Up Space For (Happy Ending)

One Year Later

The morning sun flooded through the tall, arched windows of the grand cathedral in downtown Chicago.

The air was filled with the sweet scent of fresh white roses, incense, and the harmonious sound of a live orchestra playing soft classical music.

Sitting in the pews were hundreds of guests—high-ranking figures, business leaders, estate staff, and community members. But there were no armed guards standing in the aisles, no dark shadows of fear hanging over the gathering. The Rossi family had completely legitimized their operations over the past year, turning their vast resources toward community foundations, shipping security, and children's hospitals.

At the altar stood Leo Rossi.

He looked impossibly handsome in a sharp, tailored black tuxedo, his hair styled, his dark eyes fixed intently on the heavy double doors at the back of the cathedral. Beside him stood Mateo as his best man, smiling broadly.

The music shifted into a majestic, triumphant wedding march.

The double doors swung open.

Walking down the aisle first was seven-year-old Lily. She wore a beautiful white flower-girl dress, a wreath of yellow buttercups in her curly hair, scattering pink rose petals along the red carpet with a radiant, joyous smile on her face.

And behind her walked Beatrice Miller.

She was breathtaking.

She wore a custom-designed, off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown that hugged her lush, beautiful curves with magnificent grace. Her long, dark hair cascaded over her shoulders in soft waves, anchored by a delicate crystal tiara. She took up space—gorgeous, magnificent, radiant space—stepping down the aisle with absolute confidence, dignity, and pride.

As she reached the altar, Leo stepped down to meet her. He took her hand into his own, looking down at her with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness shining in his dark eyes.

"You take my breath away, my queen," Leo whispered, kissing the back of her hand softly.

"You gave me my breath back, Leo," Beatrice smiled, her voice steady and full of love.

The priest began the ceremony, his words echoing warmly through the vast cathedral.

When it came time for the vows, Leo took both of Beatrice’s hands, looking directly into her eyes.

"Beatrice," Leo said, his deep voice carrying through the quiet church. "A year ago, my life was a dark, violent storm. My house was a fortress of fear, and my heart was buried in grief. You walked into my life not with weapons, but with courage, tenderness, and love. You bled to save my daughter. You taught me how to be a real father again. Today, I give you my life, my name, and my fierce protection forever. Where you stand, I stand."

Tears of joy trickled down Beatrice’s radiant cheeks as she took her turn to speak.

"Leo," Beatrice said softly, her voice full of warmth. "All my life, the world told me I was too much, that I took up too much space, that I belonged in the shadows. But you saw me. You saw my heart. You gave me a home where my love could bloom. I promise to love you, to honor you, and to build a life with you and Lily that is filled with peace, safety, and endless light."

"By the power vested in me," the priest announced with a warm smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!"

Leo didn't hesitate. He pulled Beatrice into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her deeply, passionately, as the entire cathedral erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.

Lily ran up to them, throwing her arms around both of their legs, giggling happily.

Leo scooped Lily up in one arm while keeping his other arm wrapped securely around Beatrice’s waist. Together, the three of them turned to face their family and friends, walking down the sunlit aisle as one united, unshakeable family.

Outside on the cathedral steps, under the warm, bright summer sky, reporters and guests gathered to take photographs.

Leo looked down at his wife, pulling her close against his side, kissing her soft hair.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Rossi," Leo whispered softly into her ear.

Beatrice looked out over the city, holding her husband's strong hand, feeling her daughter’s joyful laughter beside her, her heart overflowing with a peace she had waited a lifetime to find.

She had stopped trying to make herself smaller.

She was Beatrice Rossi—a woman who took up space, loved without fear, and held the heart of the most powerful man in Chicago forever.
