Chapter 4 - The Midnight Raid and the Badge in the DrawerBack at the Queens apartment, the scene was entirely different.

Brendan Gallagher stood in the center of the tiny living room, his service weapon drawn, kicking a laundry basket across the floor in a blind rage. The front door had been jimmied open by his own key, but Chloe was gone. Her coat was missing. Her shoes were gone. Her phone was sitting dead on the kitchen counter, plugged into the charger where she had deliberately left it.
“Bitch,” Brendan snarled, slamming his fist against the drywall, leaving a dent in the plaster.
He knew she hadn't just gone for a walk. At 2:00 a.m., he logged onto the NYPD internal database using his partner's credential override, searching local hospital admissions and precinct holding logs. Nothing. She was off the grid.
Panic, sharp and cold, began to curdle in his stomach. If Chloe went to Internal Affairs, if she showed them the bank statements she had downloaded last month before he changed the passwords, if she talked about Mateo’s fabricated drug charge... his entire career, his pension, and his freedom would evaporate overnight.
He grabbed his jacket, rushed out to his unmarked cruiser, and sped toward her brother Mateo’s makeshift apartment near the East River. If Chloe was running, she would try to grab Mateo first.
But when Brendan kicked down Mateo’s apartment door thirty minutes later, he didn't find Chloe or her brother.
He found three armed men sitting quietly in the dark living room, smoking cigarettes and waiting for him.
Before Brendan could raise his service weapon, a heavy blow from behind shattered his right elbow, sending his Glock clattering across the hardwood floor. Another man slammed him face-first into the wall, pinning his arms behind his back with the practiced efficiency of professional enforcers.
Out of the shadows stepped Elias Russo, wearing a dark wool coat, looking entirely unbothered by the violence playing out in front of him.
Elias walked up to the pinned detective, leaned in close, and retrieved Brendan’s badge from his belt holster with two fingers.
“Detective Gallagher,” Elias murmured, examining the metallic shield before slipping it into his own pocket. “You have terrible manners. Breaking into people's homes without a warrant is a federal offense—or at least, it will be by sunrise.”
“Who the hell are you?” Brendan choked out, blood dripping from his lip onto the floorboards. “You’re messing with the NYPD, you son of a bitch. You have no idea who I am!”
May you like
“Oh, I know exactly who you are,” Elias replied softly. “You’re a parasite wearing a badge. And your lease has officially expired.”
Elias gestured to his men. They hauled Brendan up, slapped heavy zip-ties around his wrists, and shoved him into the back of a waiting van. By dawn, Brendan Gallagher would find himself locked in a soundproofed shipping container down at the Russo docks, waiting for federal investigators to arrive with a comprehensive, unarguable indictment package compiled by Elias’s legal team.
