Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The arrest of Gregory Vance and his syndicate associates sent shockwaves through Portland’s criminal underworld. With Vince Carter and David Miller both sitting in county jail cells facing federal racketeering, conspiracy, and aggravated assault charges, the defense attorneys scrambling to represent them quickly realized they had no legal ground to stand on.

The physical evidence recovered from the Maple Street home—including the emergency 911 audio recording of nine-year-old Chloe bravely whispering her address while locked in the closet—painted an unyielding, undeniable portrait of abuse and criminal coercion.

On a cold Friday morning a month later, the Multnomah County Courthouse was packed to capacity. Media vans lined the snowy street outside, broadcasting the downfall of the local racketeering ring.

Inside the courtroom, Judge Evelyn Vance (unrelated to the defendants) presided over the preliminary bond and indictment hearings.

David Miller, dressed in an orange inmate jumpsuit, looked unrecognizable. His hair was unkempt, his face hollowed out by alcohol withdrawal and profound shame. He kept his eyes glued to the defense table, unable and unwilling to look toward the gallery where Elena sat alongside Detective Reed and Officer Jessica Hayes.

Vince Carter, sitting beside him, tried to maintain a defiant posture, whispering aggressively to his court-appointed public defender. But when the prosecutor played the audio recording of the 911 call into the courtroom microphone, the atmosphere shifted instantly.

“Please... come quickly. My dad and his friend are drunk. They're hurting my mom again...”

Chloe’s tiny, trembling voice echoed off the mahogany walls of the courtroom. Several jurors wiped away tears. Even hardened bailiffs looked away in disgust.

“The state submits this audio not merely as evidence of domestic battery, but as undeniable proof of systematic child endangerment and coordinated criminal intimidation,” the prosecutor declared, slamming his hand gently on the podium. “The defendants terrorized a mother and her children to shield their illegal enterprise.”

Judge Vance adjusted her glasses, her gaze sweeping coldly over David and Vince.

“Bail is denied for both defendants,” Judge Vance announced, her gavel coming down with a sharp, echoing crack. “Given the severity of the charges, the threat to public safety, and the calculated nature of the crimes, they will remain remanded in federal custody pending trial.”

As the bailiffs led David and Vince away in handcuffs, David briefly turned his head toward the gallery. His eyes met Elena’s. There was a desperate plea for forgiveness in his gaze, but Elena’s expression remained calm, resolute, and completely detached. The man she had once tried to save was gone; she was focused entirely on the future of her children.
