Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm Before the Dawn

Two months passed in a blur of quiet luxury and fierce, unyielding protection.

The Moretti estate had transformed into a fortress of peace for Mara. Under the watchful eye of top-tier physicians and Aiden’s personal attendants, her health flourished. The shadows under her eyes vanished, replaced by a radiant, blooming glow.

Yet, in the underworld of Chicago, peace was always a prelude to a storm.

It was a Tuesday afternoon when Marcus burst into Aiden’s private study, his usually unflappable demeanor replaced by tight, urgent tension.

"Boss, we have a leak," Marcus said, dropping a heavily encrypted flash drive onto the mahogany desk.

Aiden looked up from a architectural blueprint for the new pediatric wing the Moretti Foundation was funding in Mara’s honor. "Explain."

"A splinter cell of Grigori’s old syndicate—the ones we cleaned out of the eastern docks last year—managed to buy off one of our logistics supervisors," Marcus reported rapidly. "They know Mara is here. They know she’s carrying your child. They think taking her is the ultimate leverage to force us out of the shipping lanes."

Aiden’s face went completely, terrifyingly still. The temperature in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.

"Where are they?" Aiden asked, his voice a low, lethal purr.

"Three miles out. An abandoned warehouse near the South Chicago rail yards," Marcus said. "They’re moving fast. They have a localized comms jammer, but our internal grid caught the chatter ten minutes ago."

Aiden stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the Persian rug. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a heavy Beretta pistol, checking the magazine with practiced, fluid precision before sliding it into his holster.

"Lock down the estate," Aiden commanded, grabbing his dark overcoat. "Activate the perimeter defense grid. No one in, no one out."

"Boss, you're not going alone—"

"I am," Aiden cut him off, his amber eyes blazing with cold fury. "This isn't a business war, Marcus. This is personal."

Before Marcus could argue, Aiden was already striding toward the private elevator that led down to the subterranean garage.
