Chapter 2 - The Mother's Move

By 6:00 AM the following morning, the sun was just beginning to peek over the city skyline, casting long, golden shadows across the polished hardwood floors of my father's old study. I hadn't slept a wink. I sat at the heavy oak desk, a cup of black coffee steaming beside a massive stack of legal documents.
My phone buzzed on the desk. It was a text from Sarah Jenkins, my estate lawyer and one of my father’s oldest friends.
Ethan Vance posted bail twenty minutes ago. His mother flew in an elite defense team from Chicago. Be careful, Maya. They aren't going to play nice.
I stared at the screen, a cold determination settling deep in my chest. I knew exactly who Eleanor Vance was. She was a notorious social climber who masqueraded as a philanthropist while running a failing real estate empire that was bleeding cash. Ethan wasn't just a greedy husband; he was an asset deployed by his mother to save their family from financial ruin.
The properties my father had left me—three commercial high-rises in the downtown district and a prime waterfront development plot—were worth tens of millions. To Eleanor, they were a life raft.
Before I could even reply to Sarah, my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I pressed answer and placed it on speaker.
"Maya, dear," Eleanor's voice came through the line, smooth as silk and dripping with artificial warmth. "I assume you've had time to calm down after your little tantrum last night."
"Eleanor," I said, leaning back in my chair. "I surprised your son didn't tell you. I don't throw tantrums. I throw combinations. How's his kidney feeling, by the way?"
A sharp intake of breath echoed from the other end before Eleanor's tone turned freezing cold. "You think you're clever because you can fight like a street thug. But this is the real world, Maya. You completely humiliated my son, fabricated a ridiculous domestic violence charge, and had him arrested. Do you have any idea what that does to our family's reputation?"
"Your son brought a weapon to a fistfight, Eleanor. And your little 'plan' to steal my assets was recorded loud and clear."
"A recording that will never see the inside of a courtroom," Eleanor countered smoothly. "My lawyers are already filing an emergency injunction. We are contesting your father's will, claiming that you manipulated him in his final days while he was cognitively impaired. Furthermore, we are filing for a mental health evaluation for you. A woman who attacks her husband on their honeymoon night is clearly unstable, traumatized by grief, and unfit to manage a multi-million dollar estate."
I tightened my grip on my coffee mug until my knuckles turned white. "My father was sharp until his very last breath, and you know it."
"What I know doesn't matter, Maya. What matters is what a judge believes. By noon today, every media outlet in the city will have a press release detailing your history of aggressive behavior in the boxing ring, your 'unprovoked' attack on Ethan, and the tragic state of your mental health. Your neighborhood gym? The youth programs you love so much? We will defund them, alienate your sponsors, and leave you with nothing."
"Are you threatening me, Eleanor?"
"I am giving you an exit strategy," she replied harshly. "Sign over the management rights of the Sterling Waterfront development to Vance Enterprises by 5:00 PM today. If you do, Ethan will agree to a quiet, irreconcilable differences divorce, and the press release disappears. If you don't... we will dismantle your life piece by piece."
The line went dead.

I sat in the quiet study for a long moment, the silence punctuated only by the ticking of the grandfather clock. They thought they could bully me using the media and legal technicalities. They thought that because I was a athlete, I didn't understand the corporate chess game.
I picked up the phone and dialed Sarah Jenkins. "Sarah, it's Maya. Wake up the legal team. Eleanor Vance just declared war. I want a full forensic audit of Vance Enterprises on my desk by noon. Let's see how much water their life raft is actually holding."
