Chapter 3 - The Unravelling of the Lie

By Monday afternoon, the story had shattered the quiet suburban enclave of Northbrook and exploded across state news networks.

PROMINENT SUBURBAN FAMILY ARRESTED IN FOUR-MILLION-DOLLAR TRUST FUND ATTEMPTED MURDER PLOT.

The mugshots of Eleanor, Arthur, and Vanessa dominated every television screen in the tri-state area. Eleanor looked manic, her hair wild, her mouth twisted into a snarl. Arthur looked stone-faced and arrogant. Vanessa was weeping, her face streaked with mascara.

Inside the interrogation wing of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, Detective Vance sat behind a two-way mirror, watching three separate rooms.

Marcus and I sat beside him, drinking lukewarm coffee from styrofoam cups. Lily was safe down the hall in a private pediatric recovery suite, guarded by two off-duty state troopers paid for by Marcus’s family.

“They’ve been in those rooms for four hours,” Vance said, turning to us. “And the best part about catching sociopaths in a corner? They don't stick together. They eat each other alive.”

Vance flicked a switch on the console. The audio from Interrogation Room A filled our headphones.

My mother, Eleanor, was screaming at her court-appointed public defender.

“I am a pillar of the Country Club!” Eleanor shrieked, slamming her handcuffed wrists against the metal table. “My father built the local library! I didn't put that child in the trash! It was Vanessa! Vanessa was desperate! Her husband left her because she owes eighty thousand dollars to illegal offshore gambling syndicates! She begged me to help her find money!”

Vance flipped the switch to Interrogation Room B.

Vanessa was hyperventilating, wiping her nose on her orange jumpsuit sleeve.

“My mother planned everything!” Vanessa sobbed to two female investigators. “She’s been embezzling from Papa’s magistrate pension fund for five years! They were going to lose the house next month! Mom found out about Julian’s trust fund for Lily three months ago when Julian’s family estate attorney sent a routine audit letter to the house! Mom forged Evelyn’s name on the guardianship waiver! She told me if we didn't get rid of Lily before her fourth birthday, the auditors would find out she had already stolen fifty thousand dollars from the trust’s preliminary interest account!”

I stared at the monitor, my hands clenching into tight fists in my lap.

They hadn't just tried to kill my child today. They had been stealing from her since the day she was born.

When Julian died, his family’s estate executors had set up the trust, sending official notices to my parents’ address because I was living there temporarily during my pregnancy. My mother had intercepted the mail, hidden the trust’s existence from me, forged my signature to appoint herself as the interim trustee, and systematically looted the interest accounts to pay for her country club dues, Arthur’s failed stock investments, and Vanessa’s lavish lifestyle.

And when the mandatory four-year audit approached—the audit that required the biological mother’s physical presence and wet-ink signature—they realized their fraud would be exposed.

Unless Lily was dead.

Unless the trust reverted to them automatically under the secondary mortality clause.

“It’s a complete paper trail,” Vance said, opening a thick manila folder on the table between us. “We executed the search warrant on your father’s study two hours ago. We found a hidden floor safe behind a oil painting in the library.”

Vance pulled out glossy forensic photos.

Inside the safe were stacks of unopened mail addressed to me from the Hayes Family Estate Law Firm in Boston. There were ledger sheets detailing over three hundred thousand dollars in unauthorized withdrawals made by Eleanor over four years. And there was a draft of a forged will, attempting to leave my entire personal savings to Vanessa in the event of my "accidental death."

“They weren't going to stop with Lily, Evelyn,” Marcus said softly, his voice trembling as he looked at the photos. “If you had investigated Lily’s death... if you had pushed back... they were setting up papers to eliminate you too.”

I closed my eyes, a cold shiver running straight down my spine.

The family I had spent my entire life trying to please—the mother whose approval I had begged for, the father whose cold silences I had blamed on myself, the sister I had tried so hard to protect—had viewed my daughter and me as nothing more than cattle to be slaughtered for a bank statement.

“What about Emma?” I asked softly, thinking of my four-year-old niece who had been standing on that porch in her plastic tiara, completely ignorant of the evil surrounding her.

“Child Protective Services took emergency temporary custody this morning,” Vance said. “However, her biological father—Vanessa’s ex-husband, David—flew in from Atlanta three hours ago. He’s at the family court right now with full custody papers. He had no idea Vanessa was living like this. He’s taking Emma back to Georgia tonight, far away from this family.”

I let out a long, shuddering breath. At least one innocent child was getting out alive.

“Now,” Vance said, standing up and pulling his trench coat back on. “The State Attorney General has taken over the prosecution. Because of the attempted murder, the financial conspiracy, the child poisoning, and the grand forgery, they are filing under the Organized Crime and Aggravated Child Abuse statutes.”

He looked at Marcus and me.

“They offered Arthur a plea deal ten minutes ago if he testifies against Eleanor and Vanessa,” Vance added with a dark grin. “He signed it before the ink was even dry. Your father just sold out his wife and daughter to save his own skin.”
