Chapter 2 - The Silent PassengerThe miles dragged on, each one punctuated by the rhythmic thumping of the wipers. Inside the car, the silence was heavy with things unsaid. Lily had fallen back asleep, her head resting on Mr. Hops. Sarah sat staring at the dashboard, her fingers dancing nervously over the empty fabric of her coat pocket.

"What is she like?" Daniel asked, his eyes fixed on the road. "Your mother."
Sarah smiled, a faint, fleeting thing. "She’s a woman who planted an entire orchard in her backyard because she wanted me to have fresh peaches. She’s... she’s the one who taught me that you don't build a house by starting with the roof. You start with the foundation."
"Sounds like a good woman."
"She is," Sarah said, her voice catching. "She’s the only family I have left."
Suddenly, the Malibu sputtered. Daniel’s heart jumped into his throat. The engine light flashed a dull, ominous orange. The car slowed, the power steering groaning in protest.
"No, no, no," Daniel hissed, nursing the gas pedal. "Not here. Not now."
He steered the car onto the soft shoulder of the highway, the vehicle coming to a stop just as the engine died completely. The silence that followed was terrifying. They were in the middle of a desolate stretch of road, miles from the nearest exit, with the storm still howling around them like a wounded beast.
"Is it... is it the gas?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling.
May you like
"No," Daniel said, popping the hood and climbing out into the freezing rain. "It’s the alternator. Or the battery. Something electrical."
He stood in the downpour, his hands shaking as he stared at the engine. He knew nothing about cars, only how to drive them. He was a man who lived on the edge of poverty, held together by the hope that the world wouldn't break him, but tonight, the world was putting up a very good fight.
