Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood and Snow

When the storm cleared two days later, the rescue of Thomas Whitaker by Ellie Bennett and the Callahans became the talk of the entire valley.
Thomas’s attitude was completely broken. Overcome with guilt, he walked into his father's office at the mercantile and dragged out a dusty metal box from behind the floorboards.
That afternoon, Grant Callahan, the town marshal, and Luke walked into the Bennett home carrying the contents of that metal box.
Sarah sat at her table, her hands resting in her lap, while Grant laid several legal documents in front of her.
"Sarah," Grant said softly. "When your husband, James, died nine years ago in that freight wagon accident... Arthur Whitaker told you there was no insurance payout, and that James owed him five hundred dollars for the destroyed wagon."
Sarah nodded slowly. "Yes. I've been paying off that debt ever since."
"It was a lie," Grant said, his voice deep with indignation. "Thomas found the original insurance policy today. The freight company paid Arthur Whitaker two thousand dollars for that accident. James's death was caused by a rotted axle that Arthur knew about and refused to fix. Arthur pocketed the insurance money and forced you into nine years of illegal debt."
Sarah covered her mouth, a soft gasp escaping her lips as nine years of pain, hunger, and backbreaking labor washed over her.
"The marshal has already arrested Arthur Whitaker," Luke added, his eyes burning with quiet satisfaction. "The court is seizing his store and properties to pay restitution. You and Ellie are owed over three thousand dollars, Mrs. Bennett."

Ellie wrapped her arms around her mother as Sarah wept tears of relief—tears that finally wiped away the ghosts of the past.
Outside, the winter sun broke through the clouds, reflecting off the pristine white snow like millions of scattered diamonds.
