Chapter 5 - Fire and Judgment

The Venetian Club was an exclusive, subterranean lounge located in the basement of a historic building in the Loop.

By midnight, the club was empty of regular patrons. Heavy velvet curtains blocked the streetlights, and six armed men loyal to Julian Ross stood along the perimeter of the room.

Julian Ross sat at the center booth, sipping scotch. He was a gray-haired, ruthless man in his late fifties who had built his reputation on extortion and arson. Sitting beside him, pale and sweating profusely, was Trevor.

"I told you, Mr. Ross!" Trevor stammered, his hands shaking so violently his ice clinked against his glass. "I have nothing to do with Leo Vance! Harper was just my ex-girlfriend! She’s nobody!"

"Shut up, Trevor," Julian Ross sneered, swirling his drink. "If Vance's personal security team is escorting your ex-girlfriend around Michigan Avenue, she isn't 'nobody' to him. Vance has been untouchable for five years because he never shows a weakness. Today, he gave me one."

The heavy double doors of the club swung open.

Leo Vance walked into the room alone.

He wore no coat, only his dark suit, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. He walked down the center aisle of the lounge with a slow, deliberate rhythm, ignoring the six armed guards who raised their weapons as he passed.

Julian Ross stood up, a gloating, victorious grin spreading across his face. "Vance. You actually came alone."

Leo stopped five feet from the table. He didn't look at Julian. His eyes rested briefly on Trevor, who shrank back into the leather booth, trying to make himself invisible.

"You burned my warehouse, Julian," Leo said, his voice flat, emotionless, and echoing in the subterranean space.

"Cost you about four million dollars, didn't it?" Julian laughed. "That's what happens when you push the old families out of the harbor, Leo. You thought you owned this city. But you forgot that fire destroys everything."

Leo slowly pulled his right hand from his pocket. He held a small, black USB flash drive between his fingers and set it lightly on the table.

"What is that?" Julian frowned.

"That is the complete forensic audit of the Ross Development Corporation," Leo said smoothly. "Including the offshore accounts you used to bribe three federal judges, the arson records for the 2018 warehouse fires, and the wiretap recordings of your conversation with the State Prosecutor twenty minutes ago."

Julian’s laughter died instantly. "What?"

"Did you really think I came here to negotiate with you, Julian?" Leo asked, taking a step closer. "I’ve owned your lieutenants for three years. The moment your men poured gasoline on my warehouse tonight, my legal teams submitted that evidence to the FBI."

Sirens began to wail in the streets above the club—dozens of them, approaching rapidly from every direction.

Julian’s men panicked, looking around wildly as heavy boots thundered down the entry stairs. The heavy wooden doors were kicked open, and federal agents poured into the lounge with weapons drawn.

"Federal warrants! Down on the ground! Do it now!"

Within two minutes, Julian Ross and his men were forced to the floor, handcuffed, and stripped of their weapons.

Trevor was pulled from the booth by two agents, screaming in terror. "I didn't do anything! I was forced to come here! I don't know these people!"

Leo stood quietly in the center of the chaotic room, untouched, unbothered, his suit immaculate.

As Julian Ross was dragged past him in handcuffs, the old mobster looked up at Leo with wild, bloodshot eyes. "How? How did you move so fast?!"

Leo leaned down, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper meant for Julian’s ears alone.

"You thought Harper Bellamy was my weakness, Julian," Leo said coldly. "You were wrong. She is my reason."

Leo turned his back on the arrest scene and walked out of the club, leaving Trevor sobbing on the floor as federal agents read him his rights.
