Chapter 5 - The War for the Dynasty

The return flight to Chicago aboard Dominic’s private Gulfstream jet felt less like a journey back to the lion’s den and more like a descent into an active war zone.

During the three-hour flight, Dominic laid out his plans with the cold, calculated precision of a general orchestrating a coup. The engagement to Serafina DeLuca had never been about love; it had been a strategic trap designed to lure the older, more aggressive factions of the East Coast syndicate out into the open, forcing them to overextend their financial reach before the final strike.

And now, with Maddie safely by his side and carrying his heir, Dominic had accelerated his timeline by six months.

When the jet touched down at O’Hare under the cover of a freezing midnight storm, a convoy of four armored black SUVs waited directly on the tarmac—a clear violation of standard protocol, authorized only by the absolute dominance Dominic commanded across the city’s infrastructure.

They were driven straight not to the Wicker Park apartment, nor to the Valente Tower in the Loop, but to the sprawling, heavily fortified Valente estate nestled behind iron gates in the secluded woodlands of Barrington.

The estate was a fortress of stone, steel, and private security guards. But inside, it was suddenly transformed.

Within forty-eight hours of their arrival, the Chicago underworld erupted into controlled chaos. Dominic systematically dismantled the DeLuca alliance from the inside out. He froze their shipping accounts, exposed their illicit customs evasion schemes to federal prosecutors through anonymous leaks, and called in every political and judicial marker his family had accumulated over three decades.

Serafina’s father, Don Salvatore DeLuca, flew into O’Hare on a private jet expecting to demand answers, only to be met on the tarmac by federal agents executing sealed indictments for racketeering and international smuggling—indictments that Dominic had quietly handed over to the FBI as his final parting gift to the East Coast syndicate.

By the end of the week, the engagement was publicly annulled via a terse, devastating press statement issued by Valente Global Logistics, citing “irreconcilable operational differences.”

Inside the grand library of the Barrington estate, Maddie sat by the roaring marble fireplace, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw, watching the winter snow melt against the tall French doors.

The door opened silently, and Dominic walked in. He had discarded his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, powerful muscle beneath. He looked tired, the shadows beneath his dark eyes hinting at days without sleep, but there was an unmistakable aura of absolute victory radiating from him.

He walked over, kneeling beside her chair, and gently placed his large, warm palm flat against her stomach.

Maddie didn't pull away. Instead, she placed her hand over his, feeling the steady, grounding warmth of his skin.

“It’s over,” Dominic murmured, looking up into her eyes with an expression of such raw, unvarnished devotion that it took her breath away. “The DeLucas are finished. The shipping routes are entirely under our independent control. No more syndicates, no more proxy wars, no more hiding.”

Maddie stared at him, tracing the sharp line of his jaw. “You gave up half your empire just to clear the board?”

“I gave up nothing that mattered,” Dominic replied fiercely. “Everything I ever built was just a shield to protect what I couldn't afford to lose. And I almost lost you because I thought I could play chess with monsters.”

He leaned forward, pressing a long, tender kiss against her belly, right over their growing child, before looking back up at her with a crooked, familiar smile.

“Now,” Dominic whispered, his dark eyes sparkling with a dangerous, loving light. “There’s only one detail left to address.”
