Chapter 3 - THE STRANGER’S OFFERAlessandro leaned back in his chair, gesturing for one of his bodyguards to step forward. The large man reached into his coat and produced a thick, sealed Manila envelope, placing it on the table between Alessandro and Sophie.

"What is this?" Sophie asked, staring at the envelope as if it contained a coiled snake.

"That," Alessandro said, "is your ticket out of 138th Street."

He tapped his long fingers against the paper. "Three weeks ago, my intelligence network intercepted a series of encrypted financial transfers moving through the Port of New York. Over eighty million dollars in unregistered bonds, routed through a complex network of offshore holding accounts in the Cayman Islands and Zurich."

Sophie’s eyes narrowed slightly. Her academic training—years of analyzing complex international trade routes and corporate structures—instinctively kicked in.

"That's a classic layered money-laundering scheme," Sophie noted automatically. "Who is the recipient?"

"That is the problem," Alessandro said, his expression darkening. "The money is being used to buy control of the New York Waterfront Commission. Someone is trying to starve the Moretti family out of our own docks. The signature on those shell accounts matches the exact encryption algorithm used in the Marseille Port Authority heist three years ago."

Sophie felt a cold chill run down her spine. "Lebrun."

"Jacques Lebrun," Alessandro confirmed, his eyes cold as ice. "The man who destroyed your father. He didn't stay in France. He expanded. He formed an alliance with the Bratva in Brooklyn, and now he is using the money he stole from Marseille to build an empire in New York. He is coming for my family, Sophie."

Sophie sat back, her mind racing. "Why are you telling me this? You have armies of lawyers, accountants, and men with guns. What do you need me for?"

"My accountants are corporate stooges who know how to file tax returns," Alessandro said with utter contempt. "Lebrun’s financial architect is a genius. He uses an archaic mathematical cipher based on 18th-century French banking codes—a cipher that my people cannot break. But you... you studied under Professor Pierre Vance at the Sorbonne. Vance was the leading authority on French historical banking encryption."

Alessandro tapped the Manila envelope once more.

"You are the only person in this city who can decrypt Lebrun’s ledger," Alessandro said clearly. "Decode these accounts. Show me where Lebrun is hiding his capital, and I will destroy him."

Sophie looked from Alessandro’s face down to the envelope. The temptation was overwhelming. Jacques Lebrun—the man who had murdered her father, smeared his honorable name, and forced her to live like a rat in the cold alleys of New York—was here. Within reach.

"And what do I get?" Sophie asked, her voice steady.

Alessandro smiled—a real smile this time, sharp and full of lethal promise.

"First," Alessandro said, "I will clear your rent. Tonight. Your landlord will never bother you again. Second, I will provide you with a secure residence, a clean passport, and a trust fund that will ensure you never have to serve another glass of wine for the rest of your life. And third... I will give you justice for Henri Dubois. I will ensure Lebrun’s downfall is complete, absolute, and public."

Sophie sat in silence. The heavy weight of the choice settled upon her shoulders.

She was a waitress making eight dollars an hour plus tips. She was three days away from being thrown onto the street by Mr. Henderson. If she walked away right now, she could go back to scraping stale baguettes and hiding in the dark.

Or she could step into Alessandro Moretti’s world—a world of violence, power, and high-stakes danger.

"If I do this," Sophie said, leaning forward, "I am not your employee, Monsieur Moretti. I am your partner in this matter."

Alessandro’s dark eyes flashed with appreciation. "A partner. Bold."

"And I want my father’s name cleared publicly," she insisted, her gaze fierce. "Not just quietly in the shadows. I want the French government to issue a formal apology to his memory."

"Done," Alessandro agreed without hesitation. He extended his right hand across the table. His hand was broad, calloused, and powerful.

Sophie looked at his hand for a second. Then, she reached out and took it. His grip was warm and firm, surrounding her cold fingers with absolute strength.

"We have a deal, Mademoiselle Dubois," Alessandro said softly.

Before Sophie could reply, the kitchen doors burst open.

Monsieur Laurent came bustling out, followed closely by three men in dark leather jackets who clearly did not belong in L’Étoile Noir. The men had thick necks, shaved heads, and eyes that scanned the room with aggressive intent.

"Monsieur Moretti!" Laurent stammered, running toward table 4 with his hands in the air. "I am so sorry! These men... they said they were looking for the girl!"

The lead man in the leather jacket stepped forward. He reached inside his coat, his hand coming out with a heavy suppressor-fitted pistol. His eyes locked onto Sophie.

"Там она," the man grunted in heavy Russian. "Take her."
