Chapter 6 - The Skies Over AmericaThree weeks later, the air over the Midwest was crisp, clear, and painted with the brilliant amber hues of early autumn.

Flight 412 from Columbus to Denver was fully booked. Every single passenger in the cabin knew who was flying the plane. When Ethan’s voice came over the PA system during pre-board announcements—calm, steady, and resonant—the entire cabin broke into spontaneous, heartwarming applause.

Up in the flight deck, First Officer Sarah Miller smiled broadly as she finished checking her navigational logs.

"You ready for this, Captain?" Sarah asked, glancing sideways at Ethan.

Ethan adjusted his headset, double-checked his instrument cluster, and looked out across the endless expanse of blue sky stretching out toward the Rocky Mountains.

"Always," Ethan said.

Through the secure cockpit door peephole, sitting comfortably in Seat 1A—upgraded to First Class by executive decree, with an extra plush pillow and a basket of her favorite snacks—sat six-year-old Molly Bennett.

She wore her faded denim jacket. And pinned crookedly above her pocket were her silver pilot wings.

As the Boeing 737 taxied smoothly toward Runway 28L, the flight deck door chimed. Rachel slipped inside, holding a small paper cup of warm apple juice.

"Special delivery for the copilot," Rachel whispered with a wink.

Ethan took the cup, a deep, genuine smile finally reaching his eyes—the kind of smile he hadn't worn in years, free of grief, free of hesitation, anchored entirely in the love of a daughter who reminded him every single day why he loved the sky.

"Thanks, Rach," Ethan said. He keyed the cabin microphone, his voice echoing smoothly through the passenger speakers. "Cabin crew, doors closed and cross-check. Let’s go fly an airplane."
