Chapter 5 - The Gala and the Trap

The annual Chicago Hospitality and Tourism Gala was the crown jewel of the autumn social season. Held in the grand ballroom of the Halston Grand—the very room where Evelyn had dismantled Chef Julian’s career months earlier—the event brought together five hundred of the city’s most elite hoteliers, politicians, and corporate magnates.

Evelyn stood near the edge of the mezzanine, wearing a midnight-blue silk gown that hugged her curves with effortless elegance, watching the glittering crowd below.

Her life had transformed beyond recognition. Her mother’s rent was paid a year in advance; Caleb was thriving in his diesel mechanics program; and her apartment in Albany Park had been replaced by a sunlit loft near Lincoln Park.

Yet, tonight, something felt off.

As she descended the grand staircase to join John near the head table, she noticed a tight cluster of local food journalists and rival hotel executives whispering near the catering staging doors.

Among them was Arthur Pendelton, who had managed to retain influence through various board allies despite his forced resignation.

“Evelyn,” John greeted her, handing her a glass of sparkling water as she reached his side. He looked immaculate in a black tuxedo. “You look breathtaking.”

“Thank you,” she said, though her eyes were still fixed on the group near the kitchen doors. “John... do you know who catered tonight’s main course?”

John frowned. “Chef Marcus. He took over the flagship kitchen after Julian’s dismissal. Why?”

“Because Marcus was Julian’s primary sous-chef,” Evelyn said, a cold knot tightening in her stomach. “And look at the service staff walking out right now. Those aren't our regular banquet waiters.”

Before John could respond, a microphone screeched at the front of the ballroom.

Arthur Pendelton stepped up to the podium, a smug, venomous smile plastered across his face.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur announced, his voice booming over the sound system. “Before we enjoy tonight’s grand culinary presentation, I think it’s only fair to address the elephant in the room—or rather, the former housekeeper currently occupying our executive suite.”

The ballroom went dead silent. Heads turned toward John and Evelyn.

“For months, we’ve been told that Scott Hospitality Group is undergoing a revolutionary quality upgrade,” Arthur continued, gesturing broadly toward their table. “Led by an unqualified amateur whose only qualification is complaining about coffee. Tonight, we decided to put that expertise to the ultimate test.”

Arthur snapped his fingers.

Waiters rushed out, placing silver-domed plates in front of the fifty VIP guests seated at the primary tables, including the city’s mayor and the head of the tourism board.

“We have procured a specialty imported cut of Wagyu beef,” Arthur smiled maliciously. “Prepared by certified master chefs. Let’s see if our self-proclaimed culinary genius can identify what’s truly on the plate without reading a label.”

All eyes locked onto Evelyn.

The trap was laid. If she hesitated, her credibility was destroyed. If she guessed wrong, Scott Hospitality Group would become the laughingstock of the Midwest.
