Chapter 6 - A New DawnSix months later, the air in Vermont was crisp, clean, and smelled of pine trees and damp earth rather than gunpowder and city exhaust.

The small, rustic cabin nestled at the edge of the Green Mountains felt a million miles away from the cold, marble halls of the New York estate. There were no armed guards patrolling the porch, no monitors flashing with federal alerts, and no ledgers of blood and debt.
Tessa sat on the wooden front porch, a steaming mug of coffee cradled in her hands as she watched the sun rise over the tree line, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and orange.
Her phone chimed beside her on the bench. A simple text message:
I’m at the bottom of the trail. Coming up.
A soft smile broke across her face.
A few minutes later, heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel path leading up to the cabin.
Victor stepped out from the treeline. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans, his dark hair slightly ruffled by the mountain wind. The hard, dangerous edge that had once defined him seemed to have softened, replaced by a quiet, grounded peace she had never seen in him before.
He walked up the steps and sat down on the bench beside her, pulling her close into his side.
“Your mother called the clinic in Queens yesterday,” Victor said quietly, resting his arm around her shoulders. “She’s walking on her own two feet again. And Liam started his first semester at the state college in Boston. He hasn't touched a poker chip in six months.”
Tessa leaned her head against his shoulder, sipping her coffee. “And you? What about the syndicate? What about New York?”
“I handed the operational control over to Paulie and retired from the board,” Victor said, looking down at her with a gentle warmth in his dark eyes. “Turns out, an empire built on fear isn’t worth much compared to a life built on something real.”
Tessa turned her face toward his, her heart skipping a beat just as it had the first time she realized he was looking back.
On her left hand, catching the morning light, rested a simple, elegant platinum band—no diamonds, no exorbitant price tag, just a quiet promise between two people who had survived the dark and found their way into the light.
Victor reached out, taking her hand in his, intertwining his fingers with hers.

“You fell asleep on my chest once, Tessa,” Victor murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “And for the first time in my life, I didn't want you to wake up.”
“I’m not sleeping anymore, Victor,” she smiled, leaning up to kiss him. “I’m wide awake.”
