Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap

The safe house was a private, fortified medical clinic in the hills of Temecula, owned by one of Pendelton's trusted associates.
Lily was immediately transferred to a fully equipped intensive care room, where a team of independent doctors began examining her. Within hours, they delivered a piece of news that made Meredith’s stomach turn with a mixture of hope and utter fury.
"Miss Hale," the lead physician, Dr. Aris, said, removing his glasses. "Your sister's spinal injury is indeed severe, but it was never catastrophic. She is not in a permanent coma."
Meredith stared at him. "What? But Grant... Dr. Whitaker showed me the MRI scans. He said her brain stem was damaged."
"Those scans were forged," Dr. Aris said flatly. "We ran our own imaging. Your sister has been kept in a medically induced coma through a continuous, low-dose infusion of sedatives administered through her IV line. Whitaker wasn't treating her; he was actively keeping her asleep to maintain his leverage over you."
Meredith sank into a chair, her hands covering her face as she wept. The sheer, systematic evil of the man she had almost married was beyond anything she could comprehend. He had stolen her sister’s life, stolen her peace, and tortured her family, all for his own sick pleasure of control.
"We stopped the sedatives three hours ago," Dr. Aris added gently, placing a hand on her shoulder. "She is already starting to show signs of neurological recovery. She’s going to wake up, Meredith."
"Then we end this," Meredith said, wiping her tears away, her voice hardening into steel. "We end this now."
In the clinic's study, Arthur Pendelton was finalizing the legal petition.
"We have the physical evidence of the hit-and-run," Pendelton said, pointing to the laptop screen. "We have the medical records proving the forced sedation of Lily Hale. And we have your testimony of the blackmail. We are presenting this package directly to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."
"Why not tonight?" Jaxson asked, his chest tightly bandaged, sitting on the corner of the desk.
"Because we need Whitaker to make one final, fatal mistake," Pendelton explained. "Right now, he thinks he can still cover this up. He’s sent his men to search every warehouse, clinic, and hotel in San Diego. If he realizes he’s lost, he might try to flee the country. He has a private yacht docked at the San Diego Yacht Club. We need him to stay put until the federal warrants are signed."
"I'll make sure he stays," Meredith said.
She picked up her phone and dialed Grant’s personal number.
It rang only once.
"Meredith," Grant’s voice came through the line, cold and venomous. "You have exactly ten seconds to tell me where my property is before I have your mother arrested for conspiracy."
"She doesn't know anything, Grant," Meredith said, keeping her voice trembling and frightened, playing the part of the defeated victim one last time. "I have Lily. We're at the old family cabin near Julian. She's... she's not doing well. The portable ventilator is running out of battery."
A pause on the other end of the line. She could hear the sudden, triumphant rise in his breath.
"You stupid, desperate girl," Grant sneered. "You thought you could run from me? You have nothing. You are nothing without my money and my medicine. Stay right there. I am coming to get you myself. And when we get back, Meredith... I will make sure you spend the rest of your life wishing you had never left that altar."
"Please, Grant," she whispered. "Just save Lily."
"I'll see you in an hour," he said, and hung up.

Meredith looked up at Pendelton and Jaxson.
"The trap is set," she said.
