Chapter 5 - The Snake in the GlassTwo weeks passed.

The Finch Estate, once a silent tomb of limestone and cold shadows, transformed into a place filled with life, warmth, and the sweet scent of home.

Sadie took her role seriously, though she flatly refused to be treated like a pampered guest. She spent her mornings with Chloe, assisting her with online schooling, walking the estate gardens, and ensuring she attended her medical check-ups. In the afternoons, to the complete shock of the estate’s professional chef, Sadie invaded the massive industrial kitchen, baking fresh bread and cooking simple, hearty meals that filled the high-ceilinged dining room with the comforting scents of home.

For Gabriel, those two weeks were a revelation.

Every evening at 7:00 p.m., he abandoned his office, his lieutenants, and his phone calls to sit at the long mahogany dining table with Chloe and Sadie. He listened to Chloe laugh—a sound he hadn't heard in four years—and watched Sadie’s dark hazel eyes light up as she teased him about his complete lack of culinary knowledge.

For the first time in twenty years, Gabriel Finch found himself looking forward to coming home.

However, in the dark underbelly of Chicago, peace was a fragile illusion.

Don Vincent Moretti, the aging, paranoid patriarch of the Moretti family, was crumbling under the pressure of Gabriel’s systematic destruction of his street networks following the hospital attack. Desperate, humiliated, and facing absolute ruin, Moretti realized that traditional violence would not break Gabriel Finch.

He needed a traitor inside the stone walls.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Gabriel was at the downtown docks negotiating a shipping treaty, Sadie walked down to the estate’s private greenhouse to cut fresh rosemary for dinner.

The greenhouse was a beautiful glass structure at the edge of the east gardens, surrounded by high boxwood hedges.

As Sadie pushed open the glass door, a shadow moved behind the high palm fronds.

Before she could scream, a heavy hand slammed over her mouth, pinning her back violently against a stone potting bench!

"Don't make a sound, dishwasher," a cold, smooth voice hissed in her ear.

Sadie thrashed wildly, driving her heel down onto the attacker's boot. The man grunted, tightening his grip, and pulled a long, serrated combat knife from his jacket, pressing the cold steel directly against her throat!

Sadie froze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

Through the dim light of the rain-splattered glass, she recognized the man. It was Julian—Gabriel’s chief enforcer.

Sadie’s eyes widened in absolute shock and betrayal. "Julian...?" she rasped beneath his fingers.

"Keep your voice down," Julian snarled softly, his face twisted into a dark, greedy sneer. "Or I open your neck right here."

He slowly eased his hand off her mouth, keeping the knife pressed tight against her skin.

"You're working for Moretti," Sadie realized, her voice trembling with rage. "You were the one who leaked Chloe’s location at the hospital."

"Gabriel has grown soft!" Julian spat, his eyes wild with ambition. "Ever since his wife died, he’s been running this syndicate like a charity! And then you walk in—a street-rat dishwasher—and suddenly he’s talking about peace treaties and shutting down the drug routes! Moretti offered me five million dollars and the North Side territory to deliver Gabriel’s head."

Sadie glared at him with pure disgust. "He trusted you. He treated you like a brother."

"He treated me like a dog!" Julian hissed. "And now, you’re going to help me finish it."

Julian pulled a small, clear glass vial filled with an odorless liquid from his vest pocket. He shoved it into Sadie’s hand, forcing her fingers around the cold glass.

"This is tasteless digitalis," Julian whispered, his blade digging slightly into her skin, drawing a tiny droplet of blood. "Tonight at dinner, you drop this into Gabriel’s wine glass. He drinks it, his heart stops within an hour, and it looks like a natural cardiac arrest."

Sadie stared at the vial, her stomach twisting into a sickening knot. "And if I say no?"

Julian smiled—a cold, reptilian expression. "If you say no, I walk into Chloe’s bedroom right now while the guards are changing shifts, and I slit her throat before her father even clears the front gate. Then I kill you and pin it all on a Moretti hit team."

Sadie’s breath caught in her throat. The cold, brutal reality of his threat hung in the damp air of the greenhouse like a dark shroud.

"You have five seconds to decide, Sadie," Julian whispered, pressing the knife blade deeper. "Do you poison the mob boss... or do you watch the little girl die?"

Sadie looked into Julian’s dead eyes. She thought of Chloe’s bright laugh, of Gabriel’s warm hand steadying her in the hallway, and of the home she had finally found in the dark.

May you like

Sadie took a slow, deep breath, her hands steadying.

"Give me the vial," Sadie said, her voice flat, cold, and devoid of fear. "I'll do it."
