Chapter 4 - The Shattered Sanctuary

"Stay down!" Dante barked, his tender demeanor vanishing instantly as he pulled a sleek black pistol from his shoulder holster.

The heavy mahogany doors of the study flew open. Silvio burst in, a submachine gun strapped to his chest, blood dripping from a cut on his forehead.

"Boss! It’s Thorne!" Silvio shouted over the rising chaos outside. "He brought a whole convoy! They hit the front gates with an armored truck! They’re inside the perimeter!"

Clara’s blood ran cold. Terror seized her chest. "Lucia!" she screamed, scrambling out of the chair.

"Silvio, get Clara to the safe room upstairs with Lucia! Now!" Dante ordered, racking the slide of his gun.

"What about you?" Clara cried out, clutching Dante’s arm. The anger she had harbored against him was completely swallowed by a sudden, sickening panic at the thought of him dying.

Dante looked down at her hand on his sleeve, then brought his gaze up to meet hers. For a fraction of a second, his eyes burned with an fierce, unyielding devotion.

"I will tear them apart before I let them lay a finger on either of you," he promised grimly. He cupped the back of her head, pulled her forward, and pressed a hard, desperate kiss to her forehead. "Go!"

Silvio grabbed Clara’s arm, pulling her out into the hallway as shouting and automatic gunfire erupted on the lower floors. Glass shattered, alarm sirens blared, and the estate—once a serene sanctuary—turned into a warzone.

Clara sprinted up the grand staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She burst into Lucia’s bedroom. The little girl was huddled under her bed, weeping quietly, clutching a stuffed bear.

"Lucia!" Clara dropped to her knees, reaching under to pull the trembling child into her arms. "I've got you. I'm here."

"Clara! I'm scared! Where’s Papa?"

"He's protecting us, sweetie. Come on!"

Silvio led them down a hidden corridor behind a bookshelf, guiding them toward the reinforced steel panic room at the core of the house. But just as they reached the heavy metal door, a loud blast shook the hallway. Dust and debris rained down from the ceiling.

From the smoke stepped three men dressed in tactical gear, bearing the crest of Victor Thorne’s organization.

"Look what we have here," the lead mercenary sneered, raising his weapon. "Marino’s hidden treasure."

Silvio reacted instantly, raising his gun and firing two quick shots, taking down the lead man. But the second mercenary fired back, hitting Silvio in the shoulder. Silvio fell against the wall, groaning in pain, his weapon slipping from his bloody fingers.

The third gunman stepped over his fallen comrade, aiming his rifle directly at Clara and Lucia.

Lucia screamed, hiding her face in Clara’s stomach.

Clara had no weapons. She was just a waitress from the South Side. But in that moment, looking at the dark barrel of the gun pointed at the innocent child in her arms, something inside her roared to life.

She didn't run. She didn't beg.

Clara shielded Lucia completely with her own body, standing tall and locking eyes with the gunman.

"If you want her, you go through me first!" she shouted, her voice ringing clear and fearless through the smoke.

The mercenary sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Gladly, sweetheart—"

BANG!

A single, explosive shot echoed through the corridor. The mercenary’s eyes went wide, and he crumpled sideways to the floor.

Standing at the end of the hallway, framed by smoke and holding a smoking heavy-caliber handgun, was Dante. His face was covered in soot and blood, his eyes glowing with a murderous fury that defied humanity.

He didn't speak. He strode down the hall like a shadowy harbinger of death, clearing the remaining threat with terrifying efficiency.

When the last enemy fell, Dante dropped his weapon. He rushed forward, dropping to his knees and pulling both Clara and Lucia into a crushing embrace. He held them so tightly Clara could feel the thunderous, desperate beat of his heart against her cheek.

"I have you," Dante choked out, his voice cracked with raw emotion as he buried his face in Clara’s neck. "I have you... You're safe."

May you like

Clara wrapped her arms around his blood-stained shoulders, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. As she held him, feeling his body shake with the adrenaline of near-loss, she realized the terrifying truth.

She was no longer afraid of Dante Marino. She was in love with him.
