Chapter 5 - The Operating Theater of Truth

The air inside Operating Room 4 was freezing, smelling heavily of iodine, surgical steel, and heated cotton blankets. Emily lay on the operating table, a massive blue paper drape stretched across her chest, separating her face from the sterile surgical field where Dr. Vance and three assistants were already at work.

Daniel sat on a low stool right beside her head, dressed in full green surgical scrubs, a paper mask covering his face. His left hand was clamped around Emily’s, his thumb rubbing the back of her palm in a continuous, reassuring circle. Emily’s eyes were fixed entirely on his, her breathing fast and shallow beneath the clear plastic oxygen mask.

"We are through the uterine wall, Emily," Dr. Vance's voice echoed from behind the blue drape, calm, clinical, and steady. "You’re going to feel a significant amount of pressure and a pulling sensation now. Just keep breathing normally."

Emily gasped, her fingers tightening around Daniel’s until her knuckles turned white. "Daniel... I’m scared. I can't feel my legs, but I can feel... I can feel the world moving."

"I’m right here, sweetheart. I’ve got you," Daniel whispered, leaning his forehead against hers, his eyes never leaving hers for a fraction of a second. "Just focus on my voice. In a few seconds, you're going to hear him."

In the viewing gallery above the operating room, Thomas Sterling sat in the front row, watching the surgery with a cold, detached focus. Beside him sat the hospital’s chief executive officer, both men waiting to see if the high-risk gamble would pay off or turn into a legal disaster.

Suddenly, a loud, wet, suctioning sound echoed through the sterile room below.

Dr. Vance’s hands rose above the blue paper drape, holding a tiny, slick, incredibly active human being. The baby boy was covered in white vernix, his small arms flailing wildly against the cold air of the operating room, his tiny face twisted into a mask of pure indignation.

For two agonizing seconds, the room was silent.

Then, the baby opened his mouth, and a loud, powerful, high-pitched scream tore through Operating Room 4—a primitive, beautiful cry of life that completely shattered the mechanical silence of the ward.

"It’s a boy, Daniel! He’s out!" Emily wept, the tears flowing freely down her cheeks, splashing onto the paper pillow liner. "He’s crying! Oh my god, he’s crying!"

"He is, sweetheart. He’s perfect," Daniel choked out, his own tears blinding him as he watched the pediatric nurse catch the infant in a warm flannel blanket, rushing him immediately to the infant resuscitation table in the corner of the room.

"APGAR score is nine," the pediatric nurse called out a minute later, a massive grin visible behind her mask. "Weight is four pounds, nine ounces. His lungs are fully expanded, Dr. Vance. He doesn't even need the continuous positive airway pressure machine. He’s breathing completely on his own."

Dr. Vance let out a long, loud sigh of relief, looking up toward the viewing gallery with a triumphant, defiant smirk that made Thomas Sterling slowly close his leather portfolio and stand up from his seat, turning his back on the gallery and walking out into the administrative corridor.

The nurse brought the swaddled bundle over to the head of the operating table, gently resting the tiny, warm infant against the bare skin of Emily’s upper chest. The moment the baby felt the warmth of his mother’s skin, his frantic crying stopped instantly. He let out a small, soft sigh, his tiny nose nuzzling into the crook of her neck, his gray-green eyes fluttering open for one brief second to look at the woman who had spent eight months in the dark just to bring him to the light.

"Leo," Emily whispered, her voice a fragile, holy sound as she pressed her lips against the baby's soft, dark hair. "Your name is Leo. It means lion. Because you are the bravest boy in the whole world."
