Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Garden

Three days bled into one another in a blur of surreal luxury and hyper-vigilance.

Jasmine quickly realized that life inside the Ford estate was an exercise in gilded confinement. She had access to a massive indoor pool, a private library stocked with rare first editions, and gourmet meals prepared by Mrs. Gallagher. But whenever she looked out the windows, she saw men in tailored suits patrolling the perimeter with earpieces and tactical gear.

Harper became her constant shadow.

The little girl was bright, chatty, and fiercely affectionate. She dragged Jasmine from room to room, showing her secret hiding spots behind the library bookshelves, teaching her how to paint watercolors in the sunroom, and demanding stories about what people did in "normal restaurants."

Yet, beneath Harper’s bright laughter, Jasmine noticed the quiet vigilance of the child's father.

Jackson was rarely far away. Whether he was sitting at the end of the long dining table during meals, watching quietly from the doorway while Jasmine read bedtime stories to Harper, or observing them from the terrace during afternoon walks, his gray eyes were always tracking them.

On the fourth night, the silence of the estate was shattered.

It started around 2:00 AM.

Jasmine bolted upright in bed, gasping as a muffled, heavy thud echoed from somewhere down the hallway.

She threw off the silk duvet, her bare feet hitting the cold hardwood floor. She crept toward her bedroom door, turning the brass handle with agonizing slowness.

The hallway was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint, silvery moonlight pouring through the tall arched windows.

Clack.

A metallic sound. The unmistakable sound of a weapon’s safety being clicked off.

Jasmine’s breath caught in her throat. She pressed her back against the wall, her heart hammering like a trapped drum.

Suddenly, a massive arm wrapped around her waist, and a heavy hand clamped over her mouth before she could scream.

She thrashed wildly, kicking backward, her elbows striking hard muscle.

“Quiet,” a low, lethal voice hissed directly into her ear. Jackson.

He pulled her backward into the shadows of a recessed alcove just as a silenced gunshot tore through the air, embedding a slug into the wall right where she had been standing a second before.

Jasmine’s eyes widened in terror. She gripped Jackson’s forearm, her fingers digging into his sleeve.

Jackson didn't panic. His body was entirely still, coiled like a spring. He drew a suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster with one fluid, practiced motion, his eyes fixed on the dim hallway intersection ahead.

Footsteps. Heavy, rubber-soled boots moving with tactical precision.

Two men in black tactical gear rounded the corner, silencers raised, scanning the corridor.

Jackson didn't hesitate.

Pfft. Pfft.

Two muffled shots echoed in rapid succession. Both intruders dropped instantly, collapsing onto the Persian runner without a sound.

Jackson lowered his weapon slightly, his chest heaving with controlled adrenaline. He looked down at Jasmine, whose face was pale as paper, her whole body trembling violently.

“Are you hit?” he demanded, his voice hard, though his hand gripped her shoulder with reassuring strength.

“N-no,” she whispered, tears springing to her eyes. “Oh, God... they’re inside the house. How did they get past the perimeter?”

“They had inside help,” Jackson said darkly, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice. “Or a very expensive distraction.”

He grabbed her hand, his grip unyielding. “We need to move. Harper’s room is at the end of the west wing.”

They sprinted down the corridor, dodging the fallen intruders, their footsteps echoing softly against the wood. When they reached Harper’s door, Jackson shoved it open with his shoulder.

The room was empty.

The bed was neatly made, the window shattered inward, glass sparkling across the white carpet like diamonds in the moonlight.

Jasmine gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “No... no, where is she?!”

Jackson stood frozen in the center of the room. The absolute, terrifying stillness that came over him was more frightening than any explosion. His face went entirely blank, his eyes turning into shards of polished steel.

He walked slowly to the broken window, looking down at the lawn three stories below.

A black utility van was speeding away across the estate’s private access road, its headlights cutting through the dark woods before disappearing into the highway beyond the gates.

Jackson turned slowly back toward Jasmine.

The man who had been a protective father, a calculating strategist, and a comforting presence was gone. In his place stood the Mafia King of Philadelphia—a predator whose family had just been ripped away from him.

“They took my daughter,” Jackson said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying a quiet menace that made the air in the room freeze.

He raised his phone, dialing a single digit on speed dial.

“Viktor. Lock down every bridge, tunnel, and highway leaving this county. If a single vehicle crosses the city limits tonight without my express permission...”

He paused, his gray eyes locking onto Jasmine with a look that promised absolute, unmitigated destruction.

“Burn the city to the ground.”
