Chapter 3 - Poison in the WellThree weeks passed in a blur of intense learning and high-stakes corporate maneuvering. Layla threw herself into her work with relentless energy. She spent sixteen hours a day studying logistics management, contract law, and financial accounting, rapidly transforming from an outsider into Arthur’s most trusted advisor.

Her presence did not go unnoticed. While the rank-and-file workers in the lower offices came to respect her for her fairness and attention to their needs, the upper-echelon executives viewed her with deep suspicion and open resentment.

One evening, rain hammered against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Arthur’s penthouse office. Layla was organizing a stack of audited shipping manifests when Arthur suddenly gasped, clutching his chest tightly as his face turned dangerously pale.

"Arthur!" Layla dropped her pen, sprinting around the large mahogany desk.

The old man was slumping in his chair, his breathing short and shallow, his forehead glistening with cold sweat.

"My... my medication," Arthur wheezed, pointing with a trembling hand toward the top drawer of his desk.

Layla yanked the drawer open, pulling out the small amber pill bottle. She rushed to the wet bar, poured a glass of water, and helped Arthur swallow the small tablet. She immediately pressed the emergency intercom button on his desk.

"Get the medical team up to the executive suite! Now!" she shouted.

Within three minutes, Arthur’s personal physician, Dr. Vance’s long-time associate Dr. Levin, rushed into the room with two paramedics. They stabilized the old billionaire, placing an oxygen mask over his face as they prepared him for transport to the private medical wing on the lower floor.

Dr. Levin examined the amber pill bottle Layla handed him, his eyebrows knitting together in confusion.

"This is strange," Dr. Levin muttered, sniffing the contents of the bottle. "This medication was refilled yesterday by our internal pharmacy, but the color of these tablets is slightly off."

Layla’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Off how?"

"These should be light yellow. These are white," the doctor said, placing the bottle into a plastic biohazard bag. "I need to run a chemical analysis on these immediately."

As Arthur was wheeled out on a stretcher, Layla stood alone in the vast, darkened office. The sudden attack had been far too sharp, far too sudden. Her instincts, honed by years of surviving on the tough streets of the South Side, told her this was no natural relapse.

She walked slowly over to the desk, her eyes falling on the glass of water she had handed him. She pulled a clean tissue from her pocket, carefully picked up the glass, and placed it inside her bag.

Five minutes later, as she stepped into the private elevator to follow Arthur down to the medical bay, the doors opened to reveal Julian Vance standing in the hall. He was leaning against the wall, sipping a glass of scotch, a disturbing composure on his face.

"Tragic news about my uncle," Julian said smoothly, stepping into the elevator beside her as the doors closed. "His heart has been failing for years. It was only a matter of time."

"He's still alive, Julian," Layla said, her tone icy.

Julian took a slow sip of his drink. "For now. But a man of his age, under such intense stress... well, the board will likely have to declare him incapacitated by tomorrow morning."

Layla turned to face him directly, standing her ground despite his towering height. "I know what you're doing."

Julian leaned down, his face inches from hers, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper. "Listen to me very carefully, little girl. You had a nice three weeks playing executive. But Arthur is finished. The moment I take control of the board tomorrow, your little debt clearance will be revoked, your access cards will be canceled, and you'll be back on the streets sweeping diner floors where you belong."

May you like

"I'm not going anywhere," Layla said, staring straight into his cold eyes. "Because as long as Arthur is breathing, I hold his proxy. And I will burn your kingdom to the ground before I let you destroy his legacy."

Julian’s smirk faded, replaced by a mask of pure hatred. "We'll see who survives the night, Layla."
