Chapter 4 - The Confession of Ethan MercerDawn broke over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in pale shades of amber and bruised purple.

Claire hadn't slept a wink. She had spent the entire night pacing, plotting escape routes, and wondering how her life had derailed so completely between a twelve-hour hospital shift and midnight.

At 7:00 AM, the door unlocked.

It wasn't a guard. It was Ethan.

The little boy stood in the doorway, wearing flannel dinosaur pajamas, holding his one-eared stuffed rabbit under his arm. He looked pale, dark circles shadowing his eyes, but his gaze was sharp and determined.

"Can I come in?" Ethan asked quietly.

Claire blinked, surprised. "Uh... sure, Ethan. Of course."

The boy walked in, closing the door behind him, and sat down at the foot of the oversized bed. He clutched his rabbit tightly.

"My dad is downstairs yelling at Victor," Ethan announced casually.

Claire raised an eyebrow. "Is that right?"

"Yeah. Because Victor ran your background check and told my dad you're completely boring. You have zero parking tickets, your landlord loves you, and the most exciting thing you bought last month was a discounted air fryer on Amazon."

Claire let out a breathless, half-hysterical laugh of pure relief. "Well, I'm glad my mundane life has finally proven useful."

Ethan looked down at the duvet, his small fingers twisting the rabbit's ear. Then his lower lip began to tremble.

"Hey," Claire said softly, kneeling down in front of him. "What's wrong, buddy? Are you still cold?"

"No," Ethan whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek. "I lied to my dad last night."

Claire’s heart skipped a beat. "About what?"

"About how I fell in the river." Ethan looked up, his dark eyes brimming with guilt. "I didn't slip on the ice. I was trying to run away."

The air in the room seemed to freeze. "Run away? Ethan, why would you do that?"

"Because of the bad men," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a frightened whisper. "The ones who keep leaving notes on my dad's car. The ones who say my dad is a monster and that they're going to take me away so he knows what it feels like to lose everything."

Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. The political and criminal underworld of Chicago was suddenly crashing into her reality with terrifying clarity.

"Did someone push you, Ethan?" Claire asked carefully. "No. I saw a man near the bushes by the pier. He was watching me. I got scared, I tried to run back to the house, and I slipped on the icy rocks and fell straight into the water." Ethan grabbed Claire’s sleeve. "I didn't want to tell my dad because he gets this scary look in his eyes, and then he sends more bodyguards, and I'm not allowed to go outside at all anymore. But you have to tell him the truth. Don't let him think you tried to hurt me."

Claire stared at the eight-year-old boy, realizing the crushing weight of the secret he had been carrying.

Before she could answer, the door swung open wide.

Roman stood in the doorway.

His face was pale, his eyes dilated with a mixture of shock and lethal fury as he looked from his son to Claire.

"How much did you hear?" Roman demanded, his voice dangerously low.
