Chapter 3 - The Trap at the Prosecutor's Office

At 8:45 AM, the glass-and-steel façade of the State Prosecutor's Headquarters in downtown Monterrey was swarming with reporters.

News of the incident at the Mujeres de Pie charity event had already leaked to the press, sending shockwaves through San Pedro's elite social circles. Headlines across regional newspapers read: CHARITY FOUNDER ACCUSED OF ELDERLY ABUSE and MONTALVO HEALTHCARE CUTS FUNDING TO WOMEN'S SHELTER.

Teresa Cárdenas arrived in a chauffeur-driven black Lincoln Navigator, wearing a dark Chanel suit, pearl necklace, and oversized sunglasses. Flanking her were two high-priced defense attorneys and her eldest nephew, Bruno, who served as the nominal Chief Financial Officer of Cárdenas Construction.

Teresa walked past the reporters with her head held high, projecting an air of aristocratic martyrdom.

"I have no comment," she told the microphones thrust in her face. "This is a tragic family matter involving a mentally unstable daughter-in-law whom I have charitably supported for years."

Inside the fourth-floor conference room, District Prosecutor Gabriel Ramos sat at the head of a long table. Sitting on the left side were Teresa, her two lawyers, and Bruno.

The door opened, and Ricardo Montalvo walked in, accompanied by Attorney Vance and Mariana.

Teresa let out a sharp, dismissive scoff, pointing a gloved finger at Mariana. "You have nerve showing your face here, girl. Where are my granddaughters? You kidnapped my son's children!"

"Quiet, Doña Teresa," Prosecutor Ramos ordered sternly, tapping his pen against a yellow legal pad. "We are here to address two formal filings: first, your claim of theft against Mrs. Mariana López; second, a counter-complaint filed an hour ago by Dr. Ricardo Montalvo alleging human trafficking, financial fraud, and unlawful imprisonment."

Teresa’s lead attorney, a smirking man named Licenciado Morales, chuckled dismissively. "Prosecutor Ramos, these counter-allegations are laughable. A desperate play by a maid who was caught red-handed stealing three million pesos from her mother-in-law's estate. We have the bank notification right here showing an unauthorized transfer attempt from an account under Mariana’s name!"

"Let us discuss that bank account, Licenciado Morales," Vance interrupted smoothly, opening his leather briefcase and laying three heavy folders onto the table. "According to the signature card filed at Banco del Norte when the account was activated six years ago, the primary account holder is indeed Mariana López de Cárdenas."

"Exactly!" Morales declared triumphantly. "She owns the account, and she tried to empty it last night!"

"If she owns the account," Vance said coldly, "then why did your client, Teresa Cárdenas, submit a forged power-of-attorney document to Banco del Norte at 8:15 PM yesterday trying to wire three million pesos out of it to a shell account in Panama?"

Morales opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

"Furthermore," Vance continued, pushing a second folder toward Prosecutor Ramos, "if Mariana López is a penniless maid living out of charity, as Doña Teresa claimed in her sworn police statement, perhaps Doña Teresa can explain why forty-two million pesos in corporate dividends from Cárdenas Construction have been funneled through Mariana’s account over the last six years?"

Teresa’s face tightened, her polished composure cracking for the first time. "I... I manage the family trust! Diego owed me millions when he died!"

"Diego owed you nothing," Mariana spoke up, her voice ringing clearly across the quiet room.

Teresa glared at her. "Keep your mouth shut, you ungrateful—"

"Diego left those shares to me and his daughters," Mariana said, standing up and leaning across the table, looking her mother-in-law dead in the eye. "You hid his will. You locked me in a room next to the laundry dryers for six years. You made my daughters sleep on thin mats beside chemical detergent so we would never ask questions. You stole our lives!"

"Do you have proof of these ridiculous claims?!" Morales shouted, panic rising in his tone as he looked at the quiet prosecutor.

Ricardo pulled a small, silver digital voice recorder from his coat pocket and set it on the center of the table.

"This recording," Ricardo said quietly, "was captured forty-eight hours ago by a security microphone inside the master study of the Cárdenas mansion. It was delivered to my legal team this morning by a former household staff member whom Doña Teresa fired without pay last week."

Ricardo pressed play.
