Chapter 5 - The Blood FeudThe underground bunker beneath Matteo’s harbor penthouse was a command center outfitted with satellite uplinks, tactical displays, and half a dozen armed men moving in synchronized silence.

Penny sat at the central steel table, the photograph clutched so tightly in her hand that the edges were frayed and crumpled.

“My mother lied to me,” she said, her voice hollow, devoid of tears, replaced by a cold, numbing shock. “Everything I thought I knew—the struggling single mother working herself to the bone, the anonymous charity grants, the missing family—it was all a fabrication to hide from... from him.”

Matteo stood across the table, watching her with an expression that combined analytical precision with something dangerously close to protectiveness.

“Victor Marcone isn't just a rival syndicate boss,” Matteo explained, leaning his palms flat against the steel surface. “Twenty-five years ago, Marcone and my father ran the Boston docks together as partners. Before the split. Before the bloodbath that left my father dead on a warehouse floor.”

Penny looked up, her eyes wide. “What does that have to do with my mother?”

“Your mother wasn't just a seamstress, Penny. She was Elena Marcone. Victor’s younger sister.”

The words hung in the air like falling glass.

“My... my uncle is Victor Marcone?” Penny whispered, the name taking on a monstrous new dimension. “The man who just tried to kill me?”

“He didn't try to kill you,” Matteo corrected grimly. “He tried to retrieve you. When you interfered with my suit at the Velvet Room, you triggered a protocol Marcone set up years ago to bring his estranged niece back into the fold before his war with me reached its climax. But when his enforcer botched the extraction, Marcone realized you knew too much about the financial trail connecting his shell companies to your mother's care.”

“So he kidnapped her,” Penny said, a fierce, primal rage eclipsing her shock. “He took an old, sick woman to use as leverage against me.”

“And against me,” Matteo added. “Marcone knows that anyone who associates with the head of the Conti family becomes a target. By taking your mother, he thinks he can force me to hand over the North End shipping docks without a fight.”

Penny stood up so fast her chair screeched against the concrete floor. She walked right up to Matteo, looking him dead in the eye, ignoring the armed guards stationed around the room.

“You said you wanted to dismantle their empire,” she said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. “You said you had the capital and the strategy. Well, I have the bloodline. I know the family names, the old properties, the offshore drop-offs my mother used to talk about in her sleep when the dementia medicine wore off.”

Matteo stared down at her, seeing not the exhausted bartender who had poked his chest twelve hours ago, but a warrior forged in the fires of betrayal.

“Marcone thinks he’s playing a game of chess,” Matteo said slowly, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across his face. “He doesn't realize we’re about to burn the board.”
