Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at DawnBy 6:00 a.m., the sun was beginning to rise over Lake Michigan, casting a pale, bruised pink light across the Chicago skyline.

Federal agents and state financial investigators swarmed the lobby of Vance Capital on LaSalle Street, carting out boxes of encrypted servers, financial ledgers, and corporate hard drives. Julian Vance was hauled out of his own building in handcuffs, his head bowed, his tailored suit rumpled and stained with spilled scotch, flashbulbs popping blindingly in his face from the morning press corps gathered on the sidewalk.

Inside a black SUV parked two blocks away from the commotion, the atmosphere was entirely insulated from the chaos outside.

Grace sat in the back seat, cradling little Emma against her chest. The baby was sleeping peacefully, her tiny chest rising and falling in steady rhythm, wrapped in a fresh pink blanket.

The rear door opened, and Roman slid into the leather seat beside her. He looked tired—his tie was gone, his top shirt button undone, his hands bearing the faint scuffs of a man who had spent the night dismantling an empire.

He looked down at the baby, then up at Grace.

“It’s over,” Roman said quietly. “Vance Capital is liquidated. Julian’s assets have been seized and placed into an emergency trust. And the federal prosecutor has certified full legal custody of Emma to my family name, with a permanent protection order protecting her from any remaining associates.”

Grace let out a long, shuddering breath. The adrenaline that had carried her through the raid on LaSalle Street was finally draining away, leaving her limbs feeling heavy and loose.

“And you?” Grace asked, looking up into his dark eyes. “Are you safe now?”

“As safe as a man in my line of work can ever be,” Roman replied with a faint, wry smile. “The wolves in this city know who owns the territory again. Nobody will ever touch her—or you—ever again.”

He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Grace’s forehead. His fingers lingered against her cheek, warm and steady.

“You risked everything tonight, Grace,” Roman murmured, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. “You didn't have to walk into that office with me. You could have taken the check and gone to Montana.”

“I didn't want a check, Roman,” Grace said softly, leaning ever so slightly into his touch. “I wanted a home.”

Roman’s gaze softened completely, the formidable mafia boss melting away to reveal a man who had finally found something worth fighting for that wasn't tied to territory, money, or power.

“Then consider your employment contract at First Snow Kitchen officially terminated,” Roman said quietly. “Unless, of course, you’d consider a permanent position managing a much larger estate in Lincoln Park.”

Grace let out a soft, breathless laugh, tears of absolute relief spilling over her lashes.

“Only if I’m in charge of the kitchen,” she whispered.

“It’s yours,” Roman said.

He leaned in, his lips brushing hers in a gentle, lingering kiss that tasted like a new beginning.

Through the tinted windows of the SUV, the sun broke fully over the Chicago skyline, burning away the last gray shadows of the storm, illuminating a city that finally felt like it belonged to them.
