Chapter 5 - THE CONSPIRACY UNRAVELEDForty-eight hours later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Corporate Fraud Division, in conjunction with the State Attorney General’s Office, launched Operation Iron Truth.

Using the decrypted raw patient files from Claire’s micro-SD card and the text logs recovered from Grant’s burner phone, federal agents executed simultaneous arrest warrants across three states.

At 6:00 AM on a crisp Thursday morning, four black SUVs pulled up to the palatial estate of Dr. Richard Vance in the suburbs of Richmond. Federal agents breached the front doors, leading the chief executive officer out in handcuffs in front of local news cameras.

At the same moment, federal marshals entered the high-rise law offices of Vance & Associates, arresting Arthur Vance for obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit human trafficking.

The network that had seemed so invincible, so wealthy, and so deeply entrenched in the halls of power began to collapse like a house of cards built on a swamp.

In the county jail, Grant Mercer sat in a bare interrogation room.

He no longer had his high-priced attorney. Arthur Vance was sitting in a federal holding cell three floors down, facing thirty years in federal prison. Grant had been assigned a weary, overworked public defender who sat beside him with a thick stack of federal indictment papers.

The door opened, and I walked in, carrying a single manila folder.

Grant looked up. In five weeks, he had aged ten years. His hair was untidy, his cheeks sunken, his spirit crushed beneath the weight of an unyielding legal machine that was crushing his life into powder.

"Evelyn," he rasped, his voice devoid of its former arrogance. "Please... you have to talk to the federal prosecutors. They’re charging me under the RICO statute. They’re saying I’m facing life without parole."

I sat down across from him, laying the folder flat on the cold steel table.

"You are facing life without parole, Grant," I said quietly. "And you will serve every single day of it."

"I was just following Richard’s orders!" Grant cried out, leaning across the table as far as his handcuffs would allow. "He told me Claire was going to destroy us! He said if the trial data came out, Vance Bio-Tech would collapse, his brother would go to prison, and I would lose the farm! He promised me five million dollars once the statute of limitations expired!"

"You traded your wife’s life for five million dollars and ninety acres of dirt," I said, my voice empty of sympathy. "And in the end, you lost the farm anyway. The federal government seized the entire property under asset forfeiture this morning. It will be sold at public auction, and every dollar raised will go into a medical trust for the children poisoned by Vance Bio-Tech."

Grant stared at me, his eyes wide with horror as the reality of his total annihilation settled in.

"You ruined me," he whispered, tears of anger and fear slipping down his hollow cheeks. "You destroyed everything."

I stood up, adjusting my jacket.

"You destroyed yourself the moment you mistook a mother's silence for weakness," I said. "You thought Claire was alone in the world because her father was gone and her mother was old. But truth is patient, Grant. And so am I."

I turned and walked toward the door.

"Enjoy the light in this room," I added, looking back over my shoulder one last time. "Because where you’re going, they don't give you windows."
