Chapter 6 - The Crown We ShareThe penthouse erupted into a chaotic war zone.

Through the billows of white smoke, four heavily armed operatives in tactical black gear poured out of the elevator shaft, their assault rifles raised, scanning the room for targets.
Damien moved like lightning. He rolled across the polished marble floor, firing twice with deadly, pinpoint accuracy. Two of the intruders dropped instantly, their bodies hitting the floor with heavy thuds.
The remaining two operatives scrambled for cover behind marble pillars, returning heavy suppressive fire that chewed through the expensive leather furniture and shattered the decorative vases.
Harper pressed her back against the reinforced steel door of the panic room, her hands clamped over her mouth to stifle a scream. She watched in horror as Damien advanced through the crossfire, using every pillar and angle with terrifying tactical precision. He took a grazing bullet to his shoulder—dark blood soaking through the fabric of his black shirt—but he didn't even flinch. He neutralized the third operative with a swift, brutal round to the chest, and disarmed the fourth with a lightning-fast disarm-and-strike maneuver that left the man unconscious on the floor.
Silence descended upon the penthouse, broken only by the crackle of a small fire near the elevator doors and the heavy breathing of the wounded.
Damien lowered his pistol, pressing his hand against his bleeding shoulder, walking slowly toward the panic room where Harper stood frozen.
She threw the heavy steel door open, rushing out to him.
“You’re bleeding!” Harper gasped, her hands hovering frantically over his wounded shoulder. “Damien, you’re hurt!”
“It’s just a flesh wound,” Damien murmured, offering a faint, reassuring smile despite the blood dripping down his arm. “The building is secure. The reinforcement teams have cleared the lower levels. The Morelli threat... is finished.”
Harper looked up into his pale blue eyes, the adrenaline slowly draining from her system, leaving behind a raw, overwhelming wave of emotion. She didn't care about his empire, his money, or his terrifying reputation. She only cared about the man standing in front of her—the man who had taken a bullet to keep her safe.
Without thinking, she reached up, wrapped her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a fierce, desperate, and utterly consuming kiss.
Damien froze for a fraction of a second in absolute surprise before his strong arms came around her waist, lifting her slightly off the ground, kissing her back with a fierce, burning hunger that had been building since the night she slapped him across the face in the Waldorf ballroom.
Six months later, the spring sun over Manhattan was warm and bright, washing the city in gold.
Inside a private, sunlit rehabilitation clinic in upstate New York, the atmosphere was filled with tears of pure joy.
Harper stood near the parallel bars in the physical therapy wing, holding her breath. A few feet away, her nineteen-year-old sister, Lily, gripped the wooden rails with white-knuckled determination. Her legs were shaking, her muscles straining against the months of atrophy.
With a brave, tearful smile, Lily took one step forward.
Then a second.
She was walking.
Harper burst into tears, covering her mouth with her hands as Lily collapsed sobbing into her open arms.
Standing a few paces back in the doorway, leaning casually against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets, was Damien. He wore a sharp charcoal suit, his shoulder fully healed, watching the scene with a quiet, profound tenderness in his pale blue eyes.
Harper walked over to him, stepping into his embrace as he wrapped his arms securely around her, pressing a kiss into her dark hair.
“She’s walking, Damien,” Harper whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “She’s really walking.”
“I told you she would,” Damien replied softly.
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box, and flipped it open. Resting inside was a stunning ring featuring a brilliant, flawless diamond flanked by two deep blue sapphires—a ring fit for a queen.
“You slapped the most feared man in New York, crashed a mafia assassination plot, and brought my entire empire to its knees without firing a single shot,” Damien murmured, looking down into her hazel eyes with absolute, unyielding devotion. “Marry me, Harper. Rule beside me. Let me spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever makes you cry again.”
Harper smiled, her heart overflowing with complete and utter peace.

“Well, Mr. Croft,” she teased softly, sliding her arms around his neck. “Your cheek still has a scar from my right hook. But I suppose I can forgive you... if you promise to always let me have the last word.”
Damien laughed—a rich, genuine sound that belonged only to her—and kissed her deeply, sealing a fate that started with a slap and ended with an empire.
