Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the LedgerThe next forty-eight hours were a blur of encrypted phone calls, hushed security briefings, and endless cups of black coffee in the Sullivan command center. Aiden kept me sequestered in the penthouse, not out of captivity, but out of absolute necessity. Tommy Walsh and a rotating detail of armed guards secured the perimeter.

I sat at a sleek glass desk, combing through digitized financial records of Sterling Logistics that Aiden’s tech specialists had decrypted from my father’s private server.
"Find anything?" Aiden asked, walking in with a fresh mug of coffee and setting it beside my laptop. He had changed out of his tuxedo into a dark turtleneck and wool trousers, looking less like a mafia boss and more like an intimidating corporate executive.
"Look at this," I pointed to a series of offshore transactions dated six months ago. "Dad’s company didn't just lose money on port logistics. His accounts were systematically drained by a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called Vanguard Holdings."
Aiden leaned over my shoulder, his broad chest brushing lightly against the back of my chair. I felt a sudden, electric jolt race up my spine, completely unrelated to the danger we were in.
"Vanguard," Aiden murmured, his breath warm against my ear. "That’s Julian Vance’s holding company."
"Julian Vance?" I turned my head, our faces inches apart. I could see the fine amber flecks in his pale eyes. "My father’s primary competitor? The man who tried to buy Sterling Logistics for pennies on the dollar last year?"
"The very same," Aiden straightened up, his jaw tightening. "Vance has been trying to muscle his way into the Chicago shipping union for years. If he engineered your father’s bankruptcy and forced him into a fake marriage contract with me, his goal was simple: create an internal conflict within the Sullivan alliance, destabilize my leadership, and pick up the pieces of your father's shipping empire at a bankruptcy auction."
"And the forged consent?" I asked, gripping the edge of the desk.
"Vance must have known that a forced, involuntary marriage would eventually blow up in my face—either publicly, like it did at the altar, or legally," Aiden said, pacing across the room. "He wanted a scandal that would weaken my standing with the Commission."
"So what do we do?" I stood up, confronting him eye-to-eye. "We can't just sit here waiting for him to make another move."
Aiden looked at me for a long moment, a slow, dangerous appreciation dawning in his eyes. "No, Elena. We don't. Vance is hosting a private charity gala at the Drake Hotel tomorrow night to celebrate his recent corporate acquisitions. And you and I are going to make an appearance."

"As what?" I raised an eyebrow. "The jilted groom and the runaway bride?"
"No," Aiden said, a predatory smile touching his lips. "As a united front. We're going to show them that the contract isn't broken—it’s just getting started."
