Chapter 3 - Shadows in the EstateLife at the Vance estate was a surreal blend of unimaginable luxury and heavy, unspoken tension.

Within a week, Elena had moved her modest belongings from her shared apartment into a grand, sunlit suite adjacent to Mia’s nursery. Her old roommate, who had once yelled at her over fifty dollars, was left speechless when a black town car picked up Elena’s boxes and dropped off a cashier's check covering the rest of the lease.
Elena’s daily routine changed dramatically. Every morning, she woke up to warm tea, spent her mornings studying in the estate’s massive two-story library, and was driven to her university lectures in a bulletproof sedan driven by Thomas, a quiet, ex-military driver who never let her out of his sight.
In the afternoons, she belonged to Mia.
The bond between the college girl and the mob boss's daughter grew rapidly. Under Elena’s patient care, Mia began to blossom. The terror in the child's eyes slowly melted away, replaced by the natural curiosity of a six-year-old. They painted watercolors in the sunroom, baked flour-dusted sugar cookies with Mrs. Gable in the kitchen, and walked through the sprawling estate gardens with two massive Irish Wolfhounds that Julian kept for security.
Yet, despite her progress, Mia remained mute.
She communicated through tugs on Elena’s sleeve, sweet smiles, and gentle nods. Specialists came and went from the estate—world-renowned pediatric psychologists brought in by Julian at staggering expense—but Mia refused to speak to any of them. She would only sit beside Elena, holding her hand, hiding her face whenever the doctors tried to press her.
"Do not push her," Elena told Julian one evening in his private study.
The room was filled with dark walnut wood, floor-to-ceiling leather-bound books, and tactical monitors displaying feeds from every camera along the perimeter walls. Julian sat behind his heavy desk, reviewing financial ledgers that controlled shipping lines across three continents.
He looked up from his papers, fixing his piercing gray eyes on Elena. "She needs to speak, Elena. The trauma is rooted deep. If she doesn't process it, she will bear the scars forever."
Elena walked across the Persian rug, placing a tray of tea on his desk. She had grown accustomed to his intimidating presence over the past month, though her heart still did a strange, erratic flutter whenever he stood too close to her.
"She will speak when she feels safe enough to do so," Elena said firmly, meeting his gaze. "Trauma isn't a lock you can pick with money or expensive doctors, Mr. Vance. It's a wound that has to heal from the inside."
Julian stared at her for a long moment. A hint of admiration flashed deep within his cool gray eyes.
"You are surprisingly bold for someone who was terrified of me four weeks ago," he remarked softly, leaning back in his leather chair.
"I was terrified of the rumors," Elena admitted, taking a brave step closer. "I was terrified of the man who commands armed men in dark alleys."
"And now?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register that made the air in the room feel suddenly thick.
"Now I see a father who would tear the city apart to keep his daughter safe," Elena replied quietly. "Even if he forgets to take care of himself while doing it."
She gestured to his untouched plate of dinner sitting on the corner of his desk, stone cold.
Julian looked at the plate, then looked up at her, a rare, genuine smile touching his mouth. "You sound like Mrs. Gable."
"Mrs. Gable is a wise woman," Elena countered, a small grin playing on her lips. "Eat your dinner, Mr. Vance. That's an order from your daughter's guardian."
Julian let out a low, deep chuckle—a rich, masculine sound that sent a warm shiver straight down Elena’s spine. "An order? In my own house?"
He picked up his fork, bowing his head mockingly. "Very well, Miss Cruz. I succumb to your authority."
As the weeks turned into months, the invisible walls between them began to crumble. Julian, a man accustomed to betrayal, deceit, and ruthless power plays, found himself seeking out Elena's company in the quiet hours of the night. After Mia was asleep, they would sit by the fire in the drawing room, drinking tea, discussing Elena’s criminology studies, politics, and literature.
Julian discovered that beneath Elena's gentle, compassionate exterior lay a sharp, incredibly perceptive mind. She wasn't blinded by his wealth or terrified by his reputation. She saw him—the man beneath the mob boss, a man bearing the crushing weight of a dangerous empire while trying to protect the fragile remnant of his broken family.
And Elena discovered that Julian, despite his brutal position, possessed a deep, unwavering code of honor. He protected his people fiercely, punished cruelty ruthlessly, and treated her with a chivalrous, profound respect that she had never experienced from anyone in her life.
Subtle, unuttered feelings began to bloom in the quiet corners of the estate. A lingering touch when Julian handed her a book. The way his eyes softened whenever she entered the room. The way Elena’s heart skipped a beat whenever he walked her to her room at night, his tall frame blocking out the cold shadows of the hallways.
But in Julian’s world, peace was always an illusion. Shadows were always gathering.
On a rainy Tuesday evening in late January, Elena was sitting in the estate nursery, reading a storybook to Mia, who was snuggled beside her under a heavy wool blanket.
Downstairs, the front doors burst open.
The sound of heavy, panicked footsteps echoed up the marble staircase. Marcus, Julian's chief lieutenant, rushed down the corridor, his face pale, his suit jacket splattered with rainwater and dark, fresh blood.
Elena stood up quickly, moving Mia behind her.
Marcus stopped at the doorway of the nursery, breathing heavily, his gun drawn at his side.
"Miss Cruz," Marcus said, his voice tight with urgent dread. "Take the girl to the panic room in the basement. Now."

"What happened?" Elena asked, her blood running cold. "Where is Julian?"
"It's a hit," Marcus barked, turning to check the hallway behind him. "The Moretti syndicate... they breached the outer gate near the docks. Mr. Vance is holding the courtyard, but they have heavy weaponry. Move! Now!"
