Chapter 6 - The Final Stroke

Two weeks later, the penthouse at 420 Grand Avenue was bathed in the warm, golden light of an Indian summer afternoon.

The frantic chaos of the Navy Yard raid felt like a lifetime ago. Arthur Renner was recovering at a private clinic upstate, his health steadily returning under the watchful care of top specialists, while the Voronin syndicate had imploded under a wave of federal indictments triggered by the financial ledgers Marcus had successfully salvaged from the warehouse server.

Elena stood on the expansive marble balcony of the penthouse, wearing a simple silk blouse and tailored trousers, holding a cup of espresso. Her pink bunny slippers sat neatly by her bedroom door back downstairs, replaced by sensible designer flats—though she still kept the slippers in her closet as a badge of honor.

The sliding glass door behind her opened softly.

Dante stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses filled with amber scotch. He was dressed casually in a dark sweater, the harsh lines of his daily burdens slightly relaxed in the autumn sun.

He handed her a glass. Elena took it, clinking her rim against his without a word.

"Your father's shop on Bleecker reopened this morning," Dante said quietly, leaning against the stone railing beside her, looking out over the skyline.

"I know," she smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that transformed her face. "The Caravaggio sketch cleared authentication an hour ago. It's hanging in the front window."

"And you?" Dante asked, turning his head to look at her. "Are you going back to your restoration studio in Soho?"

Elena took a sip of the scotch, feeling its warmth spread through her chest. She looked up at him, her dark eyes sparkling with a challenge he had come to know all too well.

"Actually... I was thinking of expanding," she said smoothly. "My current landlord is an absolute tyrant who stomps around at three in the morning and leaves bullet holes in the neighborhood."

Dante’s mouth twitched—that rare, elusive half-smile she had been trying to extract from him since the night she met him.

"The penthouse lease is coming up for renewal," Dante said, his voice dropping into a low, smooth cadence. "And the tenant downstairs has proven remarkably difficult to evict. She keeps threatening me with household cleaning tools."

"Only when pushed," Elena corrected, stepping closer to him, the warmth of his body radiating against the autumn chill. "Though I have to admit... the view from up here is growing on me."

Dante reached out, taking the crystal glass from her hand and setting it gently on the stone ledge. He pulled her against his chest, his strong arms wrapping around her waist with a possessive, certain gentleness that made the rest of the world fade away.

"You can stay as long as you like, Elena," Dante murmured against her hair, his breath warm against her skin. "In fact... I'm officially upgrading your lease to permanent."

Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, looking up into his dark, unwavering eyes as the Manhattan sun dipped below the horizon, painting the city in shades of gold and deep violet.

She had marched upstairs to yell at a noisy neighbor, expecting a confrontation. Instead, she had found a war, a family saved, and a man who owned the city—yet belonged entirely to her.

And for the first time in her life, the noise overhead was the only sound she ever wanted to hear.
