Chapter 1 - The Weight of a SecretDr. Elaine Mercer’s calm voice filled the examination room as she adjusted her glasses and looked down at the medical charts.

“Mrs. Cross, your vitals are stable, but given your symptoms and what you’ve described, I’ve ordered a full panel of blood work, including a quantitative hCG test. Let's get these samples drawn right away.”

Alina sat rigid on the paper-covered examination table, her hands clenched in her lap. Next to her, Dorian stood near the door, his tall frame blocking any exit, his face an unreadable mask of intense concentration.

“Is it necessary?” Alina asked, her voice tight. “It could just be exhaustion. Or stress.”

“Alina,” Dorian said, his deep voice carrying a quiet finality that brooked no argument. “Let the doctor do her job.”

Ten minutes later, after the nurse had drawn the blood and quietly slipped out, the room fell into a suffocating silence. Dorian took a slow step forward, resting his hands on the back of a chair opposite Alina.

“If you’re hiding something from me,” Dorian began slowly, choosing every word with surgical precision, “you need to understand the reality of who I am, Alina. People in my world don't just walk away. And neither do I.”

“We were signing divorce papers, Dorian!” Alina snapped, the bottled-up fury of the last six months finally spilling over. “You abandoned our home. You spent weeks answering mysterious phone calls in whispered tones. You treated me like a ghost in my own house! You don’t get to lock me in an SUV, drag me to a private hospital, and demand answers about my body now!”

Dorian flinched—a microscopic movement, but Alina caught it. He stepped closer, the raw intensity in his dark eyes belying his calm exterior.

“I didn't abandon you to hurt you,” Dorian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “I pushed you away because my enemies were circling closer than you ever knew. Every second you stayed in that house, you were a target.”

Alina stared at him, her chest heaving. “And you thought shutting me out was protecting me?”

Before Dorian could answer, the door clicked open. Dr. Mercer stepped back inside, holding a printed laboratory report in her hand. A faint, knowing smile played at the corners of her mouth.
