Chapter 6 - A New DynastySix months later, the Chicago skyline looked entirely different through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the newly renovated penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.

The Castellano syndicate had undergone a quiet, sweeping evolution. Marco had phased out the old, violent extortion rackets, transitioning the family’s vast capital into legitimate commercial real estate, international logistics, and philanthropic foundations that funded urban renewal projects across the South and West sides.

The underworld whispered about the mysterious, brilliant woman who now stood beside him at every high-society gala, charity auction, and board meeting—a woman who wasn't born into the mob, but who had earned her place by taking a bullet for the most powerful man in the city.

On a crisp, clear Saturday morning, I stood on the wraparound balcony of the penthouse, wearing a simple silk dress, holding a cup of black coffee as the autumn wind whipped my hair around my shoulders.

Footsteps approached from behind, and a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest.

“You’re going to catch a cold out here without a jacket,” Marco murmured, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

“I’m fine,” I smiled, leaning back into his embrace and looking out over the glittering blue waters of the lake. “I’m just thinking about how strange life is. Six months ago, I was scrubbing grease off serving trays at the Golden Rose.”

“Six months ago, you saved my life,” Marco corrected, turning me gently in his arms so I was facing him. He looked down into my eyes with an adoration that only I was privileged to see. “And you’ve been running my world ever since.”

“Your world?” I teased, raising an eyebrow. “I thought I was just your queen.”

Marco smiled, a warm, genuine expression that transformed his sharp, dangerous features into something entirely breathtaking. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box, flipping it open to reveal a magnificent diamond ring that caught the morning sunlight like shattered glass.

“A queen needs a proper crown,” Marco said softly, slipping the ring onto my left ring finger. “And a lifetime guarantee that no one will ever dare break another glass in your presence.”

I looked down at the brilliant stone, then up at the man who had promised to protect me—and kept every single word.

I smiled, pulling him down into a deep, unending kiss as the city of Chicago stretched out beneath us, quiet, peaceful, and entirely ours.
