Chapter 6 - The Architecture of Grace

Six months later, the West Hills estate looked entirely different.

The heavy iron security gates remained open during the day, the perimeter guards were halved, and the cold, minimalist interior had been warmed by stacks of art books, fresh wildflowers, and the unmistakable sound of genuine laughter echoing through the halls.

In the sunlit conservatory, Chloe was busy painting a watercolor masterpiece of a very lopsided cat, while Wren sat beside her, gently guiding her hand with a tube of ultramarine blue.

Ashton walked in from the study, his suit jacket draped over his arm, his tie loosened. He stopped in the doorway, watching them. The tight, defensive knot that had lived in his chest for years had finally dissolved, replaced by a quiet, steady peace he had never expected to find.

Wren looked up, catching his eye across the room. A warm, easy smile spread across her face, the scar on her temple nearly invisible beneath her soft brown hair.

“Don't tell me,” Wren teased, raising a paintbrush in warning. “Another emergency board meeting in Singapore?”

Ashton walked over, kneeling beside Chloe’s chair to inspect the lopsided cat before standing up and looking straight down into Wren’s amber eyes.

“No board meetings,” Ashton said, his voice dropping into a register meant only for her. “In fact, I just canceled my entire schedule for the next two weeks.”

Chloe looked up, her eyes wide with excitement. “Does that mean we’re going camping, Daddy?”

Ashton smiled, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind Wren’s ear, his hand lingering for a warm, deliberate second against her cheek.

“It means,” Ashton said softly, looking down at the woman who had brought him back from the edge of the dark, “that I finally learned how to let someone in.”

Wren’s smile widened, her hand coming up to rest over his on her cheek. The house was full. The ghosts were gone. And for the first time in his life, Ashton Cade realized that true strength wasn't about building walls to keep the world out—it was about finding the one person worth tearing them down for.
