That night, Robert did something he had not done in years.
He accessed sealed hospital archives.
Files not meant for routine review.
Files locked under administrative override codes.
And one name kept appearing.
ELENA VAUGHN.
A patient from ten years ago.
Died during childbirth.
Child listed as deceased.
Case closed.
Except—
Robert stared at the digital scan of the newborn record.
His hands trembled again.
Because the time of birth.
The weight.
The medical notes.
None of it matched what he remembered.
Not anymore.
Someone had altered it.
Deliberately.
And the only other doctor present that night—
had been Dr. Harold Grant.
Robert’s former mentor.
Meanwhile, Joanna woke to find a different nurse at her bedside.
“You should rest,” the nurse said kindly.
Joanna nodded weakly.
But something felt wrong.
The atmosphere in the hospital had changed.
Staff whispered in corners.
Glances lingered too long.
And once—
she saw Dr. Wright standing outside her room.
Watching.
Not like a doctor.
Like a man haunted.
At 2:14 a.m., Robert met someone in the hospital parking garage.
A former colleague.
Dr. Miriam Cole.
She looked at him like he had lost his mind.
“You reopened that file?” she hissed.
“It wasn’t right,” Robert said.
“Nothing about that case was right,” she snapped. “You think you’re the only one who remembers the missing documentation?”
Robert froze.
“What missing documentation?”
Miriam exhaled sharply.
“There was another baby, Robert.”
The world tilted.
“What?”
Her voice lowered.
“A twin.”
Silence.
Cold.
Heavy.
“And one of them,” she continued, “was never recorded.”
Robert’s breath caught.
“Which one survived?”
Miriam looked away.
“That’s the problem.”
