Chapter 6 - A Feast on MarbleSix months later.

The Friday-night dinner rush at Le Clovis was in full swing.

The restaurant was more magnificent than ever. The dim amber lighting glowed against imported crystal, white truffle oil scented the warm air, and the low, seductive notes of a live jazz quartet drifted through the dining room.

On the floor below, wealthy patrons, corporate titans, and city leaders laughed and conversed in hushed, refined tones.

On the mezzanine above, standing with his hands resting lightly on the polished brass railing, stood Lorenzo Costa.

He wore a tailored tuxedo, drinking his black espresso slowly.

Bitter.

Thick.

Black.

Exactly as it should be.

Vincent stood two steps behind him in the shadows, immaculate in a dark suit, his arms crossed over his chest. But tonight, Vincent’s stone-like face held a subtle, rare look of quiet satisfaction.

"The security team is posted at all entrances, Boss," Vincent reported softly. "The mayor and the chief of police have just taken their seats in the main dining room."

"Good," Lorenzo replied, taking a sip of his espresso. "And the main event?"

"She is ready," Vincent smiled.

The heavy doors at the rear of the mezzanine opened, and Clara walked out into the warm ambient light.

She was breathtaking.

She wore a backless, emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her curves and flowed down to the floor like liquid jewel. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant vintage style, exposing her neck, where a delicate diamond necklace sparkled under the lights. On her left hand, the large emerald ring caught the amber glow of the chandeliers.

Lorenzo turned, setting his espresso cup down on the brass rail with a faint, familiar clink.

His eyes swept over his wife, a look of profound, unbridled pride and love illuminating his features.

"You look extraordinary, Mrs. Costa," Lorenzo murmured, stepping forward to meet her. He took her hand and kissed the back of her knuckles gently.

"And you look like a man who owns the city, Mr. Costa," Clara smiled, her dark eyes sparkling with happiness.

Tonight was a historic night for both of them. Le Clovis was hosting the annual City Architectural Gala, and Clara’s firm—now fully restored and expanded—had just been awarded the multi-billion-dollar contract to design the city's new waterfront civic center and public park.

Together, side by side, Lorenzo and Clara walked to the brass railing, looking down at the bustling dining floor below.

Down near the heavy velvet curtains beside the coat check—in the very booth where six months ago a bruised, bleeding woman had been shoved onto the cold floor—a waiter was setting down a bottle of vintage Barolo for a young couple celebrating their anniversary.

The white tablecloth was pristine.

The imported Italian marble floor below was spotless, shining like a dark mirror under the golden lights.

Lorenzo wrapped his arm around Clara’s waist, pulling her flush against his side. Clara leaned her head comfortably against his shoulder, taking in the beauty, the peace, and the absolute victory of the life they had built together.

"You know," Clara whispered, looking down at the shining marble below, "blood really does ruin the finish on imported marble."

Lorenzo let out a low, rich laugh—a warm sound that filled the space between them. He turned her gently in his arms, wrapping both hands around her waist, looking deeply into the eyes of the woman who had transformed his world.

"Then it's a good thing," Lorenzo whispered softly, bending his head to press his lips against hers, "that we only bring beauty into this house from now on."

Clara kissed him back, holding him tight, as the music played, the lights glowed, and the city bowed beneath the reign of the mob boss and the architect who had conquered the dark together.
