Chapter 5 - The Unbroken LightThe morning air on the rooftop was cold and crisp, but the sky above Detroit was a blinding, beautiful shade of blue.

The wind rustled Emily’s dress as she stood near the edge of the helipad, looking out over the roaring city below.

Adrian walked up behind her, wrapping his coat gently around her shoulders, his broad arms sliding around her waist to pull her close against his back.

“You were magnificent in there,” Adrian whispered against her ear, his breath warm against the chilly air.

Emily laughed softly, resting her head back against his shoulder. “We made a pretty good team, Mr. Ashford.”

“We make an extraordinary team, Emily,” Adrian corrected her softly.

He turned her around gently in his arms so she was facing him. The cold wind whipped his dark hair, but his eyes were filled with a burning, fierce tenderness that made her heart leap in her chest.

“For four years,” Adrian said, taking both of her hands in his, “I thought my life was just a series of obligations. I thought power was about holding onto control so tightly that nothing could ever hurt me again. But when I saw you in that break room—standing up to Greer, holding an empty box, refusing to break—I realized I was completely wrong.”

He reached up, his hand gently framing her face, his thumb softly tracing her cheekbone.

“Power isn't about control, Emily,” Adrian murmured, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. “Power is having the capacity to protect what is good in this world. You brought light back into my life. You brought purpose back to my heart.”

Emily looked up into his eyes, her own eyes brimming with tears of pure, overwhelming happiness.

“You gave me a chance when no one else would listen to me, Adrian,” Emily whispered, resting her hands over his chest, feeling the fast, steady rhythm of his heart beating against her palms. “You saw me when I was invisible.”

“You were never invisible to me,” Adrian said fiercely. “You were the brightest thing in the room.”

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet ring box.

Emily gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

Adrian dropped down onto one knee on the concrete helipad, the wind howling around them, the entire city stretched out beneath them like a vast carpet of endless possibilities.

He opened the box. Inside rested a breathtaking ring—a flawless, emerald-cut yellow diamond set in a band of recycled platinum, glowing like a beam of captured sunlight.

“Emily Carter,” Adrian said, his dark eyes looking directly into her soul. “I don't want to just build a logistics division with you. I want to build a life with you. I want to stand beside you in the rain, in the boardrooms, in the shelters, and in every room this world has to offer. Will you marry me?”

Tears spilled over Emily’s lashes, running down her warm cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes!” Emily sobbed happily, dropping to her knees on the cold helipad right beside him. “Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!”

Adrian let out a breathless, joyous laugh. He slid the glowing yellow diamond onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and lifted her off her feet, spinning her around on the rooftop under the bright October sun.

He brought his lips down to hers in a passion-filled, deep kiss that seemed to stop time itself, sealing a promise that no corporate storm or past grief could ever break.
