Chapter 6 - The Fall of the SyndicateThree weeks later, the grand ballroom of Hawthorne Manor was packed with the elite of Boston and New York society—politicians, hedge-fund directors, corporate executives, and underworld bosses who had managed to score an invitation to the most exclusive gala of the decade.

It was Evelyn’s first public appearance as Mrs. Hawthorne.
She didn't wear a pale gray ghost dress. Instead, she wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored crimson silk gown that hugged her figure, her honey-brown hair styled in cascading waves, and on her left ring finger, the heavy platinum ruby ring caught the chandelier light with every movement.
Standing beside her in a bespoke charcoal Brioni tuxedo, Nathaniel Hawthorne looked every bit the ruthless billionaire syndicate leader he was.
Across the crowded ballroom, watching them with undisguised venom, stood Sean O’Sullivan, the patriarch of the O’Sullivan crime family, accompanied by his chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance—the very man who had leaked Hawthorne’s corporate data to the syndicate.
O’Sullivan raised his champagne flute, his eyes narrowing as he approached the couple.
“Nathaniel,” O’Sullivan greeted smoothly, though his voice dripped with veiled threat. “Magnificent party. We were all under the impression your grandfather passed away a recluse, yet here you are, hosting high society with a brand-new bride.”
Nathaniel didn't blink. He kept one hand securely resting on the small of Evelyn’s back. “My grandfather’s legacy is in very capable hands, Sean. As is my household.”
Marcus Vance stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with a smug grin. “And the rumors about the SEC audit on your shipping ports, Mr. Hawthorne? Word in Boston is that Hawthorne Holdings is about to face federal seizure due to... irregularities in your offshore accounts.”
Evelyn stepped forward before Nathaniel could speak. Her voice cut through the ambient ballroom chatter like a razor blade.
“Funny you should mention offshore irregularities, Mr. Vance,” Evelyn said, her tone dripping with sweet, lethal poise.
Marcus blinked, taken aback. “Excuse me?”
Evelyn reached into a small evening clutch, pulled out an encrypted flash drive, and held it up for them to see. “My husband and I spent the last week reviewing the internal corporate ledgers. It turns out someone inside Hawthorne Holdings was systematically siphoning funds into an unregistered shell company in the Cayman Islands registered under an alias: Vance & O’Sullivan Associates.”
Sean O’Sullivan’s face turned the color of ash. He spun around to glare at Marcus. “You incompetent fool—”
“It’s all right, gentlemen,” Nathaniel interrupted smoothly, his voice echoing over the silent group of surrounding elites who had begun to eavesdrop. “The federal task force was notified an hour ago. The warrants are already being executed at your primary docks in South Boston.”
Before O’Sullivan or Marcus could reply, the heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open.
Four federal agents in tactical gear marched into the room, flanked by state police. They walked straight past the wealthy socialites, stopping directly in front of Marcus Vance and Sean O’Sullivan.
“Marcus Vance, Sean O’Sullivan, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy,” the lead federal agent announced, slapping steel handcuffs onto Marcus’s wrists.
As the disgraced lawyer and the crime boss were dragged out of the grand ballroom in absolute disgrace, the high-society guests watched in stunned, paralyzed silence.
Evelyn turned her head slowly, looking up at Nathaniel.
The billionaire boss looked down at her, the cold, dangerous edge in his eyes melting away into something warm, deep, and entirely devoted.
“You handled that like a veteran queen, Mrs. Hawthorne,” Nathaniel murmured softly near her ear.
May you like
Evelyn smiled, the ruby ring catching the light as she rested her hand against his lapel. She had entered Hawthorne Manor as a prisoner sold off to pay her father’s debts; she was leaving it as the undisputed ruler of her own destiny.
“Just teaching the family business,” Evelyn whispered, and pulled him down into a kiss that sealed their empire forever.
