Chapter 4 - The ReckoningCaleb didn't even hang up the phone. He sprinted out of his office, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. He bypassed the elevator and took the stairs three at a time, bursting through the lobby of Bennett Enterprises and diving into his SUV.

He hit the gas, weaving through Manhattan traffic like a madman, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned bone-white.
"Lauren! Answer the phone! Please, God, answer!" Caleb begged, dialing her number over and over on the hands-free system.
Finally, on the sixth ring, the line connected.
"Caleb?" Lauren’s voice was cheerful. In the background, Caleb could hear the clanking of dishes and Mia giggling. "We're just making pancakes. Mia wants to know if you like chocolate chips—"
"Lauren, listen to me very carefully," Caleb interrupted, his voice laced with pure terror. "I need you to grab Mia, lock your apartment door right now, and do not open it for anyone except me or the police."
The cheerfulness instantly drained from Lauren’s voice. "Caleb? What's going on? You're scaring me."
"Savannah knows the police are coming for her," Caleb explained, his voice shaking as he ran a red light. "She’s spiraling, Lauren. She took her money and she's on the run, but Marcus says she might be heading your way. I am five minutes away. Lock the doors!"
In the apartment, Lauren’s instincts kicked in. She dropped the spatula she was holding. "Mia, sweetie, go into the bedroom and hide in the closet under the blankets. Now!"
"Mommy, why?" Mia asked, her eyes growing wide with sudden fear.
"Just do it, baby! It's a game! Hide until Mommy comes to get you!" Lauren pleaded, her voice rising in panic.
Mia ran toward the back bedroom just as a heavy, thunderous bang echoed through the apartment.
SLAM!
Lauren gasped, backing away toward the kitchen counter.
SLAM!
The wooden doorframe splintered. Lauren grabbed a heavy chef's knife from the wooden block on the counter, holding it with both hands, her heart pounding so loud it sounded like thunder in her ears.
With a final, violent kick, the lock snapped, and the front door burst open.
Standing in the doorway was Savannah Reed.
She looked unrecognizable. Her pristine blonde hair was tangled and wild, her mascara was smeared beneath her eyes, and she wore a dark trench coat over crumpled clothes. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and completely devoid of sanity.
"Savannah..." Lauren breathed, backing up until her spine hit the kitchen sink.
"You pathetic little bitch," Savannah spat, stepping into the apartment and shutting the door behind her. In her right hand, she held a sleek, black handgun, pointed directly at Lauren’s chest. "You ruined everything. Five years! I spent five years building a life with him, waiting for him to forget you! And in one single day, you take it all away!"
"Savannah, put the gun down," Lauren begged, keeping her voice steady despite the overwhelming terror threatening to paralyze her. "The police know everything. Dr. Danforth confessed. It's over."
"It's not over!" Savannah shrieked, her hand shaking violently as she aimed the weapon. "Caleb belongs to me! He was supposed to marry me! If I can't have him, if I can't have the life I was promised, then you don't get to have it either! Where is that brat? Where is the child?!"
"She's not here!" Lauren lied fiercely, stepping in front of the hallway leading to the bedrooms. "I sent her to daycare! It's just me, Savannah! Leave her out of this!"
Savannah laughed—a high-pitched, unhinged sound that made Lauren’s skin crawl. "You're lying! I saw her toys! I'm going to erase every trace of you from Caleb's life!"
Suddenly, the front door was kicked open from the outside.
"SAVANNAH!"
Caleb burst into the room. He took in the scene in a fraction of a second—the splintered door, Lauren cornered near the kitchen with a knife, and Savannah holding a gun pointed at Lauren’s heart.
"Caleb!" Savannah gasped, turning slightly, her attention shifting to him. "You came! You came to save me!"
"Savannah, put the gun down right now!" Caleb yelled, taking a slow, calculated step forward, placing himself between the gun and Lauren. "Look at me! Look at me, Savannah!"
"She stole you from me!" Savannah sobbed, her arm trembling. "I gave you five years of my life! I took care of you when you were broken! Why couldn't you just love me?!"
"Because you built everything on a foundation of poison!" Caleb said, keeping his voice low, steady, and commanding, using the exact same tone he had used to calm Mia in the hospital hallway. "You didn't love me, Savannah. You wanted to own me. But it's over now. Put the gun down. Let Lauren go. If you shoot anyone, shoot me."
"Caleb, no!" Lauren cried out from behind him.
"Stay back, Lauren," Caleb ordered softly, keeping his eyes locked on Savannah. "Savannah... you remember when we were kids? You remember how we used to talk about the future? This isn't who you are. Don't ruin the rest of your life by doing something you can never take back."
For a second, a flicker of hesitation crossed Savannah’s unhinged face. Her grip on the trigger loosened slightly as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Caleb... please... tell me you love me. Just say it once... please..."
"I can't lie to you anymore, Savannah," Caleb whispered gently. "I love my daughter. And I love Lauren. I have always loved Lauren."
That was the final straw.
Savannah’s face twisted into an expression of pure, murderous rage. "THEN DIE WITH HER!"
She pulled the trigger.
BANG!
The gunshot exploded inside the small apartment.
Caleb lunged forward at the exact moment the weapon fired. The bullet grazed his shoulder, tearing through his jacket and skin, but the sheer momentum of his body tackled Savannah to the ground. The gun skidded across the hardwood floor toward the kitchen.
Lauren didn't hesitate. She kicked the gun beneath the refrigerator, then grabbed a heavy iron skillet from the stove and held it ready.
Caleb pinned Savannah’s arms above her head, wrestling her wild, screaming frame to the floor. "It's over, Savannah! It's over!"
Outside, the siren blares of NYPD police cruisers filled the street, growing louder by the second. Seconds later, armed officers swarmed through the shattered front door, taking control of the scene, pulling Savannah off the floor and placing her in handcuffs.
"Caleb Bennett! You'll rot in hell!" Savannah screamed, her voice echoing down the hallway as the officers dragged her away, hysterical and broken.
Caleb lay on the floor, breathing heavily, clutching his bleeding shoulder.
Lauren dropped the skillet and fell to her knees beside him. "Caleb! Oh my God, Caleb! You're shot!"
"I'm fine... it's just a graze," Caleb panted, looking up at her with pure relief. He reached out with his uninjured arm, pulling Lauren down into a tight, desperate embrace. "Are you hurt? Did she touch you?"
"I'm okay... I'm okay," Lauren sobbed, burying her face in his neck, smelling the rain and copper on him. "You saved us, Caleb. You saved us."
From the back bedroom, a small closet door creaked open.
"Mommy?" Mia’s small, frightened voice called out. "Is the game over?"
Caleb and Lauren looked toward the hallway. Caleb sat up, pushing through the pain in his shoulder, holding his hand out toward his daughter.

Mia ran out of the bedroom and threw herself into both of their arms. Caleb wrapped his arms around both Lauren and Mia, holding them so tight he felt their hearts beating as one single rhythm.
The storm had finally passed.
