Chapter 6 - Justice in the DarkThe abandoned rail depot off Route 41 was a skeletal concrete leviathan, swallowed by overgrown weeds and rusted iron beams. The wind howled through broken warehouse windows, carrying the biting chill of an approaching autumn storm.

Inside the cavernous central bay, a single overhead security light flickered nervously, casting long, fractured shadows across the concrete floor.

Tyrell Vance stepped out of his unmarked cruiser, his service weapon drawn, his police jacket zipped tight against the cold. His face was a mask of furious desperation. His career, his reputation, and his freedom were slipping through his fingers, and he blamed the frightened woman who had dared to defy him.

"Harper!" Tyrell shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I know you're in here! Come out, Harper, and don't make this any worse for the kid!"

Silence answered him, save for the whistling wind through the broken glass.

Tyrell stepped further into the center of the warehouse, his eyes scanning the gloom. "You think you can hide from me? I'm the law in this town! Nobody gives a damn about your word against mine!"

"You're not the law, Tyrell," a smooth, chilling voice echoed from the darkness above.

Tyrell spun around, raising his weapon toward the catwalks. "Who's there? Identify yourself!"

Step by heavy step, Dante Alighieri emerged from the shadows of the upper gantry, walking slowly down the rusted metal staircase. Behind him, moving with absolute, terrifying silence, came Nero—the massive mastiff’s breath pluming white in the freezing air.

Tyrell’s eyes widened as he recognized the man—and the dog.

"You," Tyrell hissed, adjusting his grip on his Glock. "You're Alighieri. This is none of your business, mobster. Stay out of this or I'll charge you with interfering with a federal officer!"

"Federal officer?" Dante chuckled, a cold, humorless sound that echoed like falling ice. "You haven't worn a badge with honor in a decade, Tyrell. You're a thug with a state-issued gun who beats women in kitchens and murders your own partners in basements."

"You're lying!" Tyrell snarled, raising his gun directly at Dante’s chest. "I'll drop you right here and claim self-defense! Who's going to question a police lieutenant? The local cops? They work for me!"

"They work for whoever pays them," Dante replied smoothly, reaching into his coat pocket. "And right now? They work for me."

Dante pulled out the bloody, button-eyed stuffed rabbit and tossed it onto the concrete floor between them.

Tyrell’s breath hitched. His face drained of all color, the bravado instantly shattering into raw, naked panic. "Where... where did you get that?"

"From your private filing cabinet," Dante said calmly, stepping down onto the main floor. "Along with the cash ledgers, the protection payments, and the internal affairs report on Officer Henderson."

Tyrell’s finger tightened on the trigger of his service weapon. "You broke into my precinct... you're dead. You're both dead!"

"Drop the weapon, Tyrell," a new voice commanded from the shadows behind him.

Tyrell whipped around—only to find three federal marshals and half a dozen of Dante’s armed enforcers emerging from the darkness, their weapons leveled squarely at his head.

"Federal task force," the lead marshal announced, flashing his badge. "Lieutenant Tyrell Vance, you are under arrest for the murder of Officer Marcus Henderson, corruption, extortion, and interstate domestic terrorism."

"No! This is a setup! It's planted evidence!" Tyrell screamed, wildly waving his gun between the federal agents and Dante. "Shoot them! They're criminals!"

Nobody moved. Nobody blinked.

Tyrell realized he was completely, utterly cornered. His chest heaved with ragged breaths. In a final, suicidal burst of adrenaline, he screamed in rage and swung his pistol toward Dante’s chest—

Crack.

Before Tyrell could pull the trigger, a two-hundred-pound wall of muscle launched from the shadows. Nero hit Tyrell with the force of a battering ram, slamming the corrupt police officer violently against the concrete floor. The service weapon flew from Tyrell’s hand, skidding across the dusty ground.

Nero planted a massive, heavy paw squarely across Tyrell’s chest, pinning him to the floor with bone-crushing weight, while the mastiff’s deep, terrifying jaws hovered inches from Tyrell’s screaming face.

The federal marshals swarmed forward, snapping steel handcuffs onto Tyrell’s wrists and dragging him away from the snarling beast.

"Read him his rights," Dante ordered coldly, brushing a speck of dust off his jacket sleeve.

As Tyrell was hauled away into the freezing rain, screaming threats that nobody would ever listen to again, Dante turned and walked toward the exit where a black sedan waited with its engine idling.

Inside the car, sitting safely in the backseat, Harper rolled down the window.

Emma was leaning against the glass, holding her restored, clean stuffed rabbit in one hand, while her other hand reached out to stroke the warm, soft fur of Nero’s massive head as the dog trotted up to the vehicle like a loyal guardian.

"Is he gone?" Emma asked, her voice clear, steady, and entirely free of fear.

Harper leaned out the window, looking at Dante with eyes that finally held no shadows, no terror, and no running.

"Yes, sweetheart," Harper whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face as she reached out and took Dante’s waiting hand. "He's gone. We're finally home."
