Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the SyndicateI woke up twenty-four hours later in a bed larger than my entire apartment kitchen.

The sheets were high-thread-count Egyptian cotton, soft against my bandaged back. Sunlight streamed through tall arched windows, casting long golden patterns across dark hardwood floors. A silk robe sat folded on the bedside table, alongside a small glass vial of medicine and a handwritten note from Dante: Rest. Matteo is waiting.

I sat up slowly, testing my movement. The pain had subsided into a dull, manageable ache thanks to the medical care. I wrapped the soft robe around myself and stepped out into the hallway.

The mansion was quiet, but it was a heavy, watchful quiet. Every corner held a security camera or a discreetly placed guard who nodded respectfully as I passed. They didn't treat me like a prisoner; they treated me like an honored guest—or perhaps something more.

Following the sound of soft laughter, I walked down the main staircase into a sunlit conservatory overlooking a private courtyard.

There, sitting on a velvet rug, was Matteo, playing with his toy cars. Sitting beside him, stripped of his suit coat with his sleeves rolled up to reveal dark tattoos curling around his forearms, was Dante Moretti.

The feared mafia boss of Chicago was currently letting his five-year-old son park a yellow plastic truck on his shoe.

"Clara!" Matteo gasped, spotting me near the archway. He scrambled to his feet, running over but stopping a few inches short, remembering my injuries. "Are you fixed? Does your back still hurt?"

"I'm much better, Matteo," I said, a genuine smile breaking across my face as I knelt down to his level. "Thanks to your dad's doctor."

"Papa said you're staying with us forever," Matteo announced proudly, clapping his hands together. "He said you're our guardian angel."

My eyes flicked up to Dante, who had stood up and was walking toward us. He looked impeccably handsome, though the dark circles under his eyes suggested he hadn't slept much.

"Matteo, go with Maria to the kitchen for breakfast," Dante instructed gently. "Clara and I need to talk."

The boy nodded dutifully, running off toward a kindly older woman waiting by the kitchen doors.

Once we were alone in the conservatory, the atmosphere shifted. Dante poured a cup of coffee from a silver carafe and handed it to me, his fingers lingering briefly against mine.

"How is the pain?" he asked.

"It's fine," I said, taking a sip of the hot black coffee. "Dante... we need to talk about me leaving. I appreciate everything you've done—the doctor, this room, taking care of me. But I have a life. I have an apartment—"

"Your apartment was broken into four hours ago," Dante interrupted calmly.

The coffee cup froze halfway to my mouth. "What?"

"Two men broke through your back window," Dante said, his voice dropping into that icy, dangerous register. "They searched your drawers, flipped your mattress, and set fire to your living room. My men intercepted them before the building burned down, but the message was clear."

A wave of cold terror washed over me. "Why? Why would anyone burn my apartment?! I don't owe anyone money! I don't have anything worth stealing!"

"They weren't looking for money, Clara," Dante said, stepping closer, his shadow falling over me. "They were looking for you. The men who broke into your home belong to the Falcone family—our rivals in the northern territory."

"Why would the mafia care about a waitress?!" I shrieked, panic finally breaking through my composure.

"Because you saved my son," Dante explained coldly. "In my world, loyalty to the Moretti family makes you a target. The Falcones know that I owe you a life debt. They know that by threatening you, they can draw me out. The moment you took that glass for Matteo, you were erased from the neutral world. You are marked as mine."

I backed away until my heels touched the edge of the velvet rug. "Marked as yours? I never asked for this! I was just trying to do the right thing!"

"I know," Dante said gently, closing the distance between us until he was standing directly in front of me, his tall frame blocking out the light. "And that is why I am going to protect you. You stay in this house, Clara. You will have everything you want—safety, comfort, doctors, money. But you will not step outside these gates without my guards."

"And if I refuse?" I challenged, looking up into his dark eyes. "If I want my old, simple, miserable life back?"

May you like

Dante reached out, his long fingers softly cupping the back of my neck, holding me in place with gentle firmness.

"Your old life doesn't exist anymore, Clara," he whispered, his thumb trailing over my cheekbone. "You became visible the night you saved my son. And I don't let go of what's mine."
