Chapter 2 - The Shadow InventoryThe inspection of the Rutledge house was a cover, but it served a purpose. It gave Claire a place to think, a sanctuary far from the sterile luxury of the home she shared with Ethan. The house was drafty, filled with the dust of history and the ghosts of her ancestors, but it felt solid. It felt real.

Rachel Morgan arrived at noon. She was a woman of sharp edges and sharper intellect, a friend who had always harbored doubts about Ethan’s "ambition."

"He’s playing a dangerous game, Claire," Rachel said, spreading the documents across the mahogany dining table. "Forging a Power of Attorney is a felony in South Carolina. But you have to understand, he’s already leveraged his own assets against his company’s debt. If he doesn't get his hands on this property, he’s going to be destitute."

"I don't care if he’s destitute," Claire said, her gaze fixed on the tall, sun-drenched windows. "I care that he’s been keeping a child in the shadows. Does he really think he can just lead two lives forever?"

"People like Ethan live in a perpetual state of 'next,'" Rachel said, adjusting her glasses. "They don't think about the consequences because they truly believe they can outrun them. He likely thinks that once he has control of the deed, he can divorce you, marry Natalie, and start fresh with the equity from this house."

"He’s not getting it," Claire stated.

"We need to be careful," Rachel warned. "If we move too aggressively, he might panic. If he panics, he might try to liquidate whatever else you two have shared—joint savings, stocks, the retirement funds."

Claire nodded. She had already moved a portion of the liquid assets into a private account in her name only, a move she had justified as 'emergency savings' when she started feeling the distance between them six months ago. It had seemed paranoid then. Now, it was her only lifeline.

"I need to know about the woman," Claire said. "Natalie."

Rachel clicked on her laptop. "Natalie Vance. Former surgical nurse at St. Matthew’s. She left the hospital abruptly three months ago. She has no family in the city, but she’s listed on a lease for an apartment in West Ashley. Rent is paid by a shell company—the same one Ethan uses for his 'business development.'"

"So he’s housing them. He’s feeding them. He’s living a whole second life while he complains about the cost of living with me," Claire whispered.

"It gets worse," Rachel said, her voice dropping. "I checked the birth certificate filings. Ethan is listed as the father. He signed the acknowledgement of paternity yesterday morning."

Claire felt a sharp, stabbing pain in her chest, but she pushed it aside. The sorrow would come later. Right now, there was only the strategy.

"I need to meet her," Claire said.

"That’s suicide," Rachel protested. "If he finds out you know..."

"He won't know," Claire said, her resolve hardening. "He thinks I’m still the naive woman who believes his lies about fried control boards and cafeteria sandwiches. He’ll be back at the office. He’ll be distracted. I’ll go to the apartment."

"Claire, don't."

"I have to see her, Rachel. I have to know if she’s a partner in this crime, or if she’s just another one of his victims."

As Rachel left, Claire looked at the house. She realized that everything he had touched here needed to be scrubbed. She would have to sell it, eventually, but not for the reasons he wanted. She would sell it to start over, to bury the memory of the six years she had spent worshiping a man who was nothing more than a hollow shell.

But first, she had to confront the architecture of his lie.
